BATTERY LIGHT

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

BATTERY LIGHT

Post by marco2002 »

Hi Everyone

My 406 Hdi 110 has a small problem with it and its just started today. While the engine is running the battery light flashes once and there is an audible beep at the same time? Anyone else had this problem?

I had a brand new battery in march and the alternator was replaced about 3 years ago wasn't cheap either £350 including the tensioner and a new belt!

I will check the voltage with a meter when it stops raining here also got one of those testers that tells you if alternator is under/overcharging . Been raining all day on and off. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Does anything come on the display when the beep happens?

Had a very similar sounding problem on my HDI 110. Turned out to be momentary slipping of the alternator drive belt. Fitted a new belt and no more problems. The old belt looked fine when it came off.

hope this helps.

Hi
Just done a few readings with an old analogue meter today. With the engine off battery is 12.6 volts. With engine running battery is 14.5 volts. Also tried this with engine running & the headlights on reading 14.5 volts then tried it again with engine running, headlights on & heater on reading was again 14.5 volts.

The reading i'm getting seems to be fairly constant and doesn't fluctuate. Surprisingly the battery light/annoying beep sound hasn't happened today!

Just checked the Haynes manual and it says in there that the reading should be approx 12 to 13 volts and no more than 14v so maybe the alternator is overcharging?

Think i'll have to get the garage to check this out for me......

14.5 volts is exactly the normal charging rate.
I would be worried if I had 12 to 13 volts.

How's your crank shaft pulley?

Garage checked crankshaft pulley & drivebelt about 2 months ago all ok i clock up 500 miles a week so i wouldn't take a chance with something like that. Crankshaft pulley was replaced at 109,000. Mileage is now 167,000 and still going strong......

I was thinking about getting the bottom pulley & drive belt replaced when i get the cam belt done probably easier as the whole lot comes off anyway and thinking about new waterpump as well while they have it all apart......

The mysterious flashing battery & beep sound have gone not done it once today. Will let you know if it happens again!!

Sorry to bring back an old post, however I was using the search function and a problem I am having is very similar to this.

over the weekend when I've been driving my 406 2.0 HDI V reg Ive been hearing a audible beep, it is exactly the same as the warning beep for if fuel levels low or handbrake left on etc, however no warning message has been displayed on the centre console screen or light come on the instrument panel.

This morning the beep was happening alot and very infrequently some times contstant beeps then nothing for a few mins then the odd beep! Again however no lights coming on and staying on, I then however noticed that what is causing this.

The battery light keeps coming on for very short periods, it basically illuminates then goes off, sometimes so quick infact its off before the beep sometimes! and it keeps repaeting, on my drive to work this morning it was doing it none stop for the first 10mins of drive then it stopped.

What might be causing this? the beep is so very very annoying especially in the mornings on my commute! My car was serviced last month at 149k, but I would of thought if something like this related to the service this problem would of occured straight after the service?

This may or may not help but worth checking.

My better half had a fault with the alternator on her fiat ugly bug, battery off and fully charged, all electrics working fine then warning lights start to flash when first started after 4 days, battery dead on day 5.
Finally got it on the ramps this weekend (alternator buried nicely in the engine bay) and found the sensor wire that runs back to the battery to tell it when to charge was damaged, probably due to stones flicking up off the tyres. Stripped back the wire, crimped on some spade connectors and wound a shed load of insulation tape around the joint, job done.

Note to anyone wishing to access the alternator on the fiat JTD engine, go to you local hospital and have 2 fingers from each hand removed and 360 degree rotational elbows fitted. they are an absolute bitch to get at!!!! Would have been easier to take the engine out!!!!

can be due to bad brushes in the alternator if the belt is in good nick. Early inspection on the alternator might prevent a failure I assume.

The faults become more apparent today, the battery light now comes on when the engine drops below 1000revs whether idle or when driving, a message then comes up saying battery charge fault.

Also conincidently the drivers side dipped bulb has gone too, but prob not related!

Im going to get a multimeter later and check the voltage across the engine, bar the cable being broken is there anything else I should look for?
