Oil sump plug

Thought I would do a quick oil change on the 406 (r reg d8, 2.ol glx), but was foiled by the sump plug.

What the heck size is it?

None of my sockets fit it properly, and I can't find any bits in my toolbox that fit into the centre of it properly either.

Before I jack it up for a proper look, (I was doing it the lazy way without lifting the car!) what size socket, or allen key/hex bit do I actually need, or is it a rondom peugeot specific tool that is needed?

The socket you need is 21mm, the allen key type are 8mm, the square socket type are 9mm square ( a special Peugeot size).
21mm = 13/16, the old type spark plug size.

if you looking for the square bar/hex type
take the door handle of one of your interior doors take the square bar that connects the two handles together and remove
you will find that this is a perfect fit
dont forget to replace before the mrs comes back!!

you can get the tool to remove the sump plug in any good motor factors i got mine from halfords believe it or not and not to bad priced either i got a full set of them on a bar type rail.

Got the right size socket, but it seems the last person who changed the oil did the sump plug up far too tight. It won't budge.

Looks like a trip to a local garage on monday with some beer money and get them to put it on a ramp and get some proper leverage on the damn thing.

Oh well, so as not to have a completely wasted morning thought I'd move on and do the sparks instead, only to find that peugeot decided to hide them down in a well, which I can't reach with my spark socket.

Seems that the car is trying to annoy me at the moment!!

you should have been able to get at them with a spark plug socket and a extension bar or maybe two just be careful not to exert too much force as if they wernt copper greased when replaced they maybe stuck in place and could snap in the head with the sump plug you could get a small power bar from halfords i got a few in my toolbox ranging from 6" upto 24"

Buy a 24", 1/2" drive breaker bar. Halfords sell 'em and it doesn't start to bend until you're putting around 1000Nm on it. I wouldn't dream of doing work on a car without having a breaker bar to hand - there's virtually nothing you can't undo with one!
