I'm going to try to make a start on this Friday evening, have the clutch off the car before eurocarparts shuts 1pm Saturday, get a new clutch kit off them (please god let them have one in stock!!!) and have the car back on the road Saturday evening before going to the pub to drink my backache away

Of course, if anyone wants to help, get first hand experience on a 406 clutch change, and don't mind listening to heavy metal, they're welcome to come over and give me a hand... Didn't think so

Parts collected from the dealer (apart from the driveshaft heat shield, which is coming from France next week )
Drop-link and anti-roll bar bushes ordered from ECP for collection tomorrow
Clutch kit will be in stock at ECP tomorrow

Just need to get the clutch off now and take it to ECP before they close at 1pm...

OK it's not quite going to plan... I expected to have the clutch off about midday tomorrow, but that's not going to happen. It only took me 4 hours work to remove it!!! That's from the car in the state it was in after getting towed home by the AA!

4 f**king hours! Bloody hell! It took me the first hour just getting the wheels off (goddamn hub nuts)

I also have mild concussion, 3 bumps on my head from the body, subframe and gearbox, and a lump on my forehead where I tried to embed the end of the offside driveshaft

I did drop the gearbox on the floor again though This time I had it nicely balanced on the jack on just my 2nd attempt, then the wood split. Thankfully a rolled up old camping mat broke the fall. Damn I'm good

The job is much, MUCH easier without the gearbox mount pin in the way. I used a pipe wrench to remove it.

4 HOURS from a driving car to the clutch in a box!!!!

Oh, and about the release bearing... it's stiff to turn, stiff on the gearbox collar, is 'lumpy' when turned while pushing it together/apart, and BURNT . Does seem like it's a manufacturing defect

I got two workshops, a double garage and a 4x4m "pig room" (had a hoist in it for hauling them up by their back legs and... well, you get the picture) and my other half wants me to sell my house, so I'd end up working in her semi-derelict wooden barn

Well that's the gearbox+flywheel cleaned up, the release bearing fork bearings changed, the cruise control refitted albeit without the not-on-servicebox protective bag which is pretty much destroyed (turned out to be the £15 valve that was dead, not the £300 pump. Thank god!) and the clutch fitted to the flywheel, aligned by jamming a screwdriver in it at strategic locations

Little problem now... I can't get the gearbox balanced on my jack

Not at the moment I ain't - not unless I can get the gearbox to sit on the jack without falling off

If I can't, think I'll end up doing something really really dumb like OD'ing on painkillers then trying to bench press it into place so it gets held on by the gearbox driveshaft, then try to whack a bolt or 2 in before it falls and does serious damage to my face

Tie some cable or strong string through a couple of bolt holes, thread it through the engine holes (obviously ones that will take the string/cable through them, outer edge ones probably) and through the corresponding gearbox bolt holes.Fasten something similar to the gearbox mounting and to the gearbox mounting on the car, place the gearbox on the jack and lift it bit by bit tightening the string/cable as you get higher, this should make the whole assembly stable whilst you raise the jack.
Have something ready such as 2 long rods that might fit into the bolt holes in the engine (round file or big screwdrivers etc.)
When you get the box somewhere near undo the engine/gearbox string/cable and remove it, keep the mounting fitting on to help with stability.

Make sure you put it in gear before you try to enter the clutch shaft and remember how I fitted the driveshafts back in to help engage the clutch shaft.
