Wrong oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by marty31 »

Hi all, newbie here.

Am the owner of 406 hdi since last week , estate, one previous owner but a high miler....186,000.

Car is in really good nick , interior like new, bodywork clean etc.

Mechanically car has plenty of grunt and drives really using no oil , water, or strange noises.

It needed 2 front drop links.....2 rear calipers, master cylinder(more of that saga anon) and new pads all round.

Now heres my question......when I changed the engine oil and filter, the mutt in Halfords told me the correct spec oil was 0w/30 fully synth.

So I bought 5 litres of Castrol Edge 0/30........expensive stuff it is too@70 quid.

When I checked the Castrol website I see the correct spec oil is 5/40????????????????????

Will the 0/30 be ok? I dont abuse it , but I plan on keeping car for about 2 years, any advice appreciated.

I wouldn't go sloshing in fully synthetic if the car has not been running on that type of oil before, also if the engine has not been regularly flushed then the fully syn can sometimes shift waxy deposits of it's own accord which can obstruct oil ways etc :(

My advice would be a good make 10W/40 Semi Synthetic (about £20.00) - that suits the HDi perfectly and I'll put money on the fact that it's already been running that oil for all its life.

Oil flushing is a good idea, Forte is the best but I'd speak to someone first because the mileage is high and it might not like being flushed. Safest bet really is get the engine nice and hot and then drain the old stuff straight away.

I did similar with my 2.0 HDi going for the fully synth 0/30. I did same check as you and then contacted castrol to confirm that I shouldnt use the above oil. They replied next day saying not to use it or to change it out immediately for the 5/40 version. My hdi is comparitvely low mileage and I also knew it had been using synthetic oil prviously
It does say at halfords its suitable for all modern diesel engines though so its a good warning for others considering using the oil. I think its too thin for the turbo oil seals and so could lead to the turbo going tits up.

Agreed. Regarding the 0W, I don't suppose you kept your receipt? It's worth going down to Halfords and arguing with the manager, see if you can get your squids back. And if that doesn't work maybe try hocking it to a local garage or self-employed mechanic? You might not get all your money back but a some would be better than nothing :)
