Faulty temp sensor?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Faulty temp sensor?

Post by BJ92 »

I have a 96 2.0L ,
Recently while travelling on a hot day about 40 degrees C (Australia), i reved my car a little bit higher than usual to overtake a car. It did not like that! The 'stop' warning light came on and the air con dissabled. The temp guage was showing the normal temp of around 70-80.

When i pulled up, and turned off the ignition, the fans stayed on for about 5 - 10 mins. after the engine had cooled down i learned it was very thursty and i poured about 4 bottles of water in. On the trip home, the warning light stayed on for about 10 mins then turned off and was fine for about a week.

But... as i turned on the car last week, the 'stop' warning light turned on again so i turned it off and the fans went again for 10 mins after ignition was turned off. and this problem isnt going away!

so im thinking electrical problem. looking at previous posts similar, they are saying the three relays between the 2 fans could have faulty connections, so i checked them but they look to be in perfect condition.

I need help!
Your advice would be much appreciated!

You may have damaged the coolant temperature sensor when you ran it dry the other week. I'd definitely try replacing that first

After having a look i found and disconnected the coolant sensor and everything is back to normall! :cheesy:

A replacement is on its way, (the only one in Australia!).

Thanx a million for the advice!

The attached photo is where i found the coolant temperature sensor:

That white one that i unplugged turned out 2 be the reverse light switch. :? :?

Im still puzzled why it fixed the problem when i unplugged it though???? :?

Anyway all is now good!

I suspect you may have moved/knocked whatever was actually causing the fault - as far as I'm aware the reverse gear switch on D8s is wired straight to the reverse lights (maybe via a relay...)

Anyone know what that unrestrained connector just above it is for?
