<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

would the SRI benefit from some NGK Iridiums, or would I be better off getting some conventional boggo NGK's instead ?

The whole point of Iridiums is the long life aspect, they will last up to 5 times longer than the conventional plugs, in my opinion, that is the only benefit from the standard plugs (NGK are very good plugs).

guys, I'm a bit confused about what impression I have given you here...

I wanted to know what spark plugs to get for my car and weather spending more is in anyway beneficial or necessary.

I've got a pretty good idea what the answer is already, but I thought someone might be able to give me specific advice for my engine.

when I quoted Mr Earwig I was being serious... not sarcastic. I certainly wasn't taking the piss.

the last thing I am is a boy racer

for the record, I am driving a 14 year old 406, I am 41 years old, and I have fcuk all money...

I was asking the question because I don't want to be throwing money away for no reason

I'm not a boy racer either, and I'm 29. Yet I still see nothing wrong with trying to squeeze a bit more performance out of your car. I had thought about buying performance spark plugs, but I am not mechanically-minded in the slightest, so I didn't have a clue where to start. I was going to start a thread on this, but you beat me to it! :cheesy:

As always, the silliest question is the one you didn't ask. There's no harm in asking, after all. And you're right to - there's any number of buggers out there that will promise huge performance boosts to any car with their latest shiny gadget, when it really won't make too much difference - and finding this out the hard way will cost you your first-born child, your dog, and any number of limbs thrown in to boot.

There are things you can do to squeeze extra performance out of the car, but the parts tend to be expensive and the gain is relatively little. Plus, since the engine and chassis were never designed for performance, this will typically shorten the lifespan, and nobody wants you to spend a lot of money tarting up a car only for it to fail soon afterwards. As enthusiasts, we're more keen to see these cars cared for, and kept going, and in the case of a 406 that really is at the very end of its life, for the still-good parts to be used to keep other people's 406s going.

The guys on this forum are used to seeing new members (typically younger folk) pop up and ask how to turn their £500 406 into a monster that would leave a Lambo standing, and we all know that's just not going to happen (much as we'd love it to, just to wipe the smugness off the rich bugger's face).

From reading through this thread, the consensus seems to be that buying expensive after-market spark plugs won't offer your car any (noticable) improvement in performance, but will last longer than cheaper / OEM spark plugs will.

If you do find something that gives your car a boost, though, let us know about it!

Col; I drive the 2 litre turbo exec. Same engine as yours. I fitted the recommended bosch spark plugs (according to the halfrauds flip chart!) when I bought the car and i've been perfectly happy with the performance.

Its a simple engine, with no fancy combustion chambers so its really pointless spending £40-50 quid on plugs. I have standard electrode NGK's in mine, less than a tenner and tried and tested. I've used them in all my cars over the years and gapped correctly they are spot on, you cannot go wrong.
