HDI timing belt, eloys, FAP, etc....

Hiya Dudes,

A mate of mine has a 307 HDI which is showing signs of a bit of wear and tare. To cut a long story short it's down on power, MIL is on and it's due a timing belt change and a service. Following an incident involving £30 worth on unleaded last week and a subsequent bill of £172 to get it drained, new filter, and some "special" additives , the mechanic advised him that the eolys was empty, so he's been looking at prices to get it it all sorted....

Timing belt change, he's been quoted £350 +VAT (not including the water pump), seems a bit steep to me?

Eloys stuff, he's been quoted anything from £180 for a refill and forced regeneration to over £600 by one garage claiming it'll almost certainly need a new particulate filter .

And none of that includes the rest of the 96000 mile service....

He's a bit concerned that the total bills could potentially run to more than the car's worth, he's seen similar ones on ebay for about £1200

What do you HDi guys think? What should he be paying for those jobs?

I'm not sure about costs as it's all different here but I'd say the needing a new FAP thing is a load of testicles.

You can now get aftermarket FAP's if it needs one, (which it shouldn't at that mileage),from here or here.

I'm planning to do away with mine in the new year. There's a company in Pontypridd called Total Tuning who claim to be able to re-program a 406 ECU, (Bosch EDC15 C2), so it will work without the FAP, maybe they can do a 307 too. (I stress I have no personal experience on this, I'm just relaying what I've heard).

There's a fair bit of info on this subject on the coupe forum, (where most of the 2.2 HDi's lurk) .

What about the prices for timing belt, eloys refill etc guys?

Timing belt's a piece of wee-wee. But there are a couple of other bits should really be done at the same time as the belt and rollers: Water pump, Crankshaft pulley, Aux belt, and maybe the crankshaft oil seal depending on condition.

If your mate or even you are willing to get some grease on your elbows, you can get the bits for just under £140 inc VAT, the job can be done in less than a day. Other than a bottle of tip-ex and a couple of 8mm drill bits or bolts to set the timing, this is a really easy job to do, and you don't need anything special in the way of tooling.

Cost of topping up the eloys is about right, £400 for a timing belt sounds very steep, I paid in the region of £200 I think (Bridgend Peugeot/Citroen specialists).

Mine needed Eloys at about 70k, and I've cleaned the fap filter myself twice, once at about 65k and again at about 105k.

So for his to need eloys and fap at 40k, I'd want a second opinion.

Now I think the eloys is anjected into the tank every time you fill up with diesel (as in every time you open the filler cap), so if he's been in the habit of puting a fiver and having lots of trips to the petrol station, he could've used it all up prematurely.

There's a level in the eloys tank that should tell you when it's low, but I'd heard that their not the most reliable.

Also, there's a sensor that says when the fap filter is blocked, and that IS reliable, so if he hasn't been getting this message, I'd say his FAP is fine.

I'd recommend a trip to the good lads in Bridgend for the timing belt, and they can check out the eloys and fap at the same time.

If I put Petrol through a HDi then I'd be thinking very carefully about keeping the car for much longer
