Post by mada2607 »

Why would anyone want to drive something that looks like an insurance write-off, or an MOT failure?

I don't get it.

But then, I don't get why some people buy *dance music*, why some people consider rap to be music, or treat X-Factor like anything other than the karaoke contest it so obviously is. Perhaps at 29 I'm an old fart

Edit: Oh, and if anybody here sees someone having given this "treatment" to an otherwise healthy 406, then I'm pretty sure there will be trouble

Or trying to be one... :P People actually buy music?

You mean that rusty old Craptina I used to drive was actually a fashion statement years ahead of its time? And I thought it was just a police magnet.

I should have kept my crusty old fiat uno, it was held together by spit!
I must admit some of the rat bikes I've seen at rallies look brilliant, not so sure about cars though.

I do, but then I'm very discerning about what bands I listen to; I don't like the "shovelware" that comprises about 99% of modern chart music. I'll pay for something I think is good.

Check out some of these bands (some you will already know, or at least I'd hope so!):

- Rush
- Yes
- Dream Theater (check out the albums "Images and Words", "Scenes from a Memory", and "Black Clouds & Silver Linings"
- Spock's Beard (check out the albums "V" and "Snow")
- Transatlantic (all three studio albums are exceptionally good)
- Liquid Tension Experiment
- Frost* (check out the album "Milliontown"; it's STUNNING)
- Led Zeppelin
- Joe Satriani
- Antoine Dufour (does some *amazing* things with a steel-string acoustic guitar)

Maybe we should have a "music" thread...

I understand the look to a certain extent, not something I'd do to my car, especially as I spend nearly £3000 removing rust from my MR2. The rat look used be specific to VW Campers and Beetles I thought? Then it seems to have spread amongst the VW scene and now a lot of people are doing it. I dont understand why you would want to do to a pretty much brand new Golf though (3rd picture from bottom) :o

There is a club forum for it now:

Each to their own and all that.

The older VW stuff looks kind of ok with the look of age about them, the more modern stuff just looks contrived tbh.

I know a number of folks who like this sort of effect, even to the point of paint stripping the paint off a perfectly good bonnet, then soaking it in salty water to get it rusty quicker...... strange but true.

I like the proper rat-rods, and don't really have a problem with the other old stuff. But as others have said I really don't get the attraction with purposely distressing a nice car to look like that.... :?
