Heated Mirrors, not working....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Heated Mirrors, not working....

Post by EvilTwin »

Hi, the recent cold weather has brought another new thing to light on my 406.

The heated mirrors dont heat, not a sausage. The elements in the rear screen that are sitll working or have been repaired get hot enough to de-ice, so I know part of the system is working. Firstly am I correct to presume that my model has heated mirrors (2002 Rapier Hdi Estate), the passenger mirror glass fell off over summer, revealing a heater element on the back. So I hope this means I'm supposed to have them.

Logicly I can see one of two problems here, but I'm not sure of the system design, so I need some help from anyone in the know out there...

Is there a separate fuse for the mirrors? If so I can go check that first.

If not I guess Its a pair of new heated mirror glasses I'll need to get, If so, any ideas how much will they cost to replace?

Service Box says they're about 40 quid  I'd assume the same fuse as the heated rear screen (if it's safe to assume anything on these damn cars  ) shame you didn't check for power when the mirror fell off but that probably wasn't uppermost in you mind at the time.

My heated mirrors do not work either, funnily enough I replaced the outside temperature sensor in the passenger side wing mirror and could see the two wires going into the back of the glass for the heating element.

The glass is fiddly and tbh, for £80+ id rather just not bother messing about with it all again  (Unless its something easy)

40 quids for a mirror? scandalous, you can get a whole mirror unit for that on ebay...

Is there a connector for the mirror motor/heating cables inside the door, under the plastic cover? Could check with a test lamp there for heater power supply.

My coupe's heated mirrors are next to useless compared with the Mk.4 Golf I drove for a while. The Golf's would evaporate away any rainwater in under a minute but the coupe will make a little round clear patch on lightly misted glass

Dunno if it's because they're shot (never heard of a heating element getting cooler when dying) or if it's normal for 406s

Might be an interesting modification job though... how powerful's my alternator, and what temperature do you suppose the mirror housing will melt at?

3 degrees Celcius cooler than the heating element needs to be in order to do its job properly

Pop the glass out and unplug the connectors; check if you've got 12v when the rear demister is on. They are not fused separately, direct feed off the rear heated screen switch. One other thing that I noticed is the tags that the leads plug into on the glass can be pretty weak; I ran a bit of solder onto the tags to strengthen them.

According to HBOL, on D9's the relays are in the BSI.

Within the BSI, there are separate relays and separate fuses - one set for the rear window and one for the mirrors...

Just a slim possibility - the two circuits are also separately fused in the engine fusebox - MF1 = mirror heaters, MF9 = hrw.

The BSI is under the fusebox, which is by the driver's right knee. It's a D9 thing,

My heated mirrors seemed to have stopped working as well. But saying that the last year or so they have been getting weaker & weaker.I had the same om my previous Xantia.I popped the mirror glasses out & the elements on the year of the glasses had corroded quite bad.I got some new glasses at Halfords for around £15 each, about 5 yrs ago.

Well i`ve fixed my heated mirrors for free  With all the snow & ice here,i started up the 2.1TD GLX i have waiting for its mot,& the mirrors melted the snow fairly quickly. So i popped my glasses out on my 406,had power going to them but they would`nt melt the snow.So i swapped them over with the GLX mirror glasses. They now work a treat :D Even the same shade of tinted blue as my car.
So i guess the heated elements do get weaker over the years untill they stop working.
