"Clutch rod" being the rod on the master piston, the rod on the slave piston or the rod the release bearing fork pivots on?
The latter is MAJOR work
Either of the former two involve either finding another tubby or a 2.1TD in a scrapyard, or buying a new clutch hydraulic system for £225, then 5 mins work

that sounds bad, and expensive the way the AA man described it was the rod that connects to the back of the pedal has broke, inside the footwell, i think he said it connects to a bit of plastic(like a collar) on the back, does this help in anyway?

Ah right. You'll need new clutch hydraulics setup then. It's just 2 pistons and a little pot all connected together, and they're just bayonet fitted (like a household lightbulb) into the bulkhead and the gearbox, with a ball joint on the clutch pedal needs disconnecting first. Very easy job to change. Should be about £50 from a breakers yard, and you'll need one from a D8 (mk.1, 1996-1999) 406. Either the HDI, 2.1TD or another 2.0 petrol turbo. The other models have a cable clutch except the V6 which has a different unit, and D9s (the Mk.2 cars) have a completely different system. Estate, saloon or coupé, it's all the same.
If you don't fancy that, take your VIN to a dealers and get a new one for £225. It will feel nicer than an old unit though

ahhh ok thanks for the advice,£225 seems a bit steep for just a rod etc i had a look on ebay but cant find any, but then my search was a bit blind when i dont really know what im looking for

In your D8, it will be a sealed system like mjb says. The "rod" in your case is called a master clutch cylinder and needs to be replaced along with the piping and the slave cylinder. Should be easy.
ahhh ok, well i think when i go for my lunch i will ring ALS motorparts and see if they can get them, i have to say thanks very much for everybodys help so far especially as i am new to this game!
