I'm going for an LCD; I would go for one of Samsung's lovely new LED TVs, but I can't afford one :(

I've asked for money for Christmas to put towards the purchase of a nice shiny new TV. Mrs Highlander isn't impressed as we have a Goodmans 25in widescreen CRT television that's actually pretty good (for a standard definition analog TV set), but she watches more actual TV than I do, so she'll end up getting as much out of it as I will.

I have a PS3, so hi-def gaming abound, and can buy Blu-Ray Discs instead of DVDs at that point, and will also be upgrading to Sky HD. And I'm very much looking forward to it 8)

As it is, I'm probably going to go for a Samsung 5-series, either a 32in or 37in TV is big enough for my living room. Won't be wall-mounting either - I'm crap at that kind of thing, and I like the flexibility of moving it when we want to rearrange the front room, without having to leave screw holes in the wall and wallpaper.

Why not nip down to some of the local shops (Curry's, Comet, John Lewis, PC World, etc) and find a demo TV that gives you the picture quality you like, make a note of the model number, and then go home and find it cheaper on the internet? That's what my brother did, and he got himself a very nice deal on an LG telly that works very well for him.

I went through all this about 4 months ago, and from reading reviews and speaking to people in the stores, it came down to the following:

If you're going over 40", go for plasma.
If you're going plasma, Pioneer is the best, Panasonic 2nd.

Because of this info I opted for a Panasonic full 1080HD 50" plasma, and I haven't regretted it once. It's a Curry's ex-demo one and was reduced down to £700 from about £1500. I can't remember the model number off hand, but it's one of the top 2 of the Panasonic range from 2008.

Just my 2 cents though!

General concensus here is that whatever people buy, they are happy with.

Basically, get whatever looks good to *you* and suits your needs and I am sure you won't go wrong.
