D8 wiper failure - common problems, please?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

D8 wiper failure - common problems, please?

Post by Doggy »

My bro's 98 TD estate has had a previous glitch or two where the front wipers have not self-parked properly, but today when the flick-wipe was operated, the wipers ran on slow speed for several wipes before blowing the fuse. My searches on here suggest it's probably motor failure, but in view of the current 'orrible weather, thought I'd sound you good people out before freezing nuts off checking.....
Do D8's have one or more relays, do they play up?
HBOL suggests it's a nightmare removing the wiper arms, (& they have to come to get at the motor). Is this so?

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

personally i would just replace the motor

10 minutes to remove the wiper arms then plastic covers

remove all of linkage and motor (all comes out as one big lump)

take it in doors and replace the motor with one from a scrappy (pay attention to the arrows on the linkage, this will make sense when you see it)

put it all back together (without putting the arms on)

with the arms still off turn the wipers on, so they return to their off position, put arms on, job done

i did mine in 25 mins, but i had practised at the breakers yard!

Sorted 8)
Twas the motor - £15 from the scrappy inc. free practice, as recommended :P
(forgot/didn't notice arrows  but I took care to copy the relative positions of the cranks/linkage so all good) :)
Thanks for the advice :D
