Smell of burning rubber?

Post by Doggy »

After two 10-mile drives today, on each occasion, as I got out of the car, I noticed this smell. Burning rubber, as you get when a truck locks its wheels etc.
The first time, I assumed it might have nothing to do with my car, somebody else caused it. After a cursory glance at the tyres, I ignored it. Drove home a little later, no smell. Did a couple more short runs, no smell. Loaded up the dogs & took em out of town for walkies and it was there again when I stopped!
All tyres cold to the touch and looking fully inflated, (car drives / behaves perfectly). Opened the bonnet, checked around aux. drive belt etc. - no smell, nothing hot.

I'm out of ideas, but many years engineering experience tells me I'm missing something & if I figure it out before it breaks, I'll be really glad I did.

Be grateful for any ideas you might have - I have a 60-mile round trip planned for tomorrow & Thursday and they're still promising more snow.

Pug Paranoia, my favourite :( Maybe it's just a plastic bag wrapped round the exhaust.

Already checked!
There's Pug paranoia and there's FAP-equipped Pug paranoia.
(I had considered an abortive FAP regen causing eggsauce temp. high enough to burn the rubber mountings)....

The smell could also be a seizing(tightening up) aux pulley or perhaps too loose with the bigger load on the alternator making it slip?
My workmate has my old D8.. smelt rubber and thought it was a flat tyre but it was the aux belt and a knackered pulley.

Eggsauce rubbers? although Diesel eggsuaces don't get that hot really but then again during a regen? :|

I can only suggest making sure the wheels aren't binding and making the brakes hot(ter)?

Also check for Diesel leaks? coolant leaks? all these thing can smell a bit weird.

I had this on a previous car, ended up being one of the exhaust mounts not mounted correctly and touching the exhaust pipe, and causing burning rubber smell.
Once again I have a project... The wife says if I dont stop spending money on my cars she's off... Shame i'll miss her....
