Removing wing passenger wing mirror

Post by STALLED »

Hey kids,

Whats involved with the removal of the wing mirror on the D8 406 - does the door card have to come off, or is it a process of gently prying off the interior cover and working from there?

Furthermore - how do you get the glass out of the mirror. I want to install a temp sensor in the base of the mirror - so it would require the partial disassembly of things or is there a better way to go about it?

Cheers,

Joel

Door card does not need removed IIRC. Easiest way to get a temp sender would be to get a whole mirror complete with the sensor in and just replace the whole unit.

Next to impossible here if you wanted one in China Blue - 406's are a fairly rare commodity!

Easy peasy Joel.
First of all; adjust the mirror so it's pointing as high as it can!
As you say; pry off the inside cover & you'll see 3 torx screws holding the mirror body on. Easiest to wind the window down while you're doing it unless you've got arms 10ft long!
If you look to the base of the mirror glass you'll see the release part of the clip; it's basically a sprung bit of wire. Press these with a screwdriver & the clip will ping off allowing you to remove the glass. Go easy as there are 2 wires feeding the heated element in the glass which you'll have to unplug; these can be quite brittle.
Next remove the motor module; 3 torx screws again I think & there's a plug on the side.
You should now have access to the sensor in the bottom!

Hm, I replaced the sensor without removing the mirror body. Just unclip the mirror and change the sensor

I didn't have enough length in the old wires to solder the new one in situ.

Ahhh, yes. The wire goes deep inside the car somewhere. I cut it right at the base of the old sensor, so had enough to attach the new one on.

No it just goes to the plug on the wing mirror, I couldn't be bothered stripping the mirror apart again after I'd combined two pairs of smashed ones into a good set!
Before you ask I haven't painted them yet, still silver!

Thanks for the help everyone!

The purpose of the excercise is to install an external temp gauge - I have the sensor and the internal display - Now its just a matter of connecting everything up!

Let you know how it all goes

Ok...

Got back today from interstate - Now I have installed the display - Step one complete.

Part two - connecting the sensor...

I removed the interior cover for the wing mirror and was greeted with a torx screw - Needless to say, when I went to go and find my set...they wern't there! Could see the loom through the hole in the door - but when I tried pulling on it, I could not get the loom through the hole in order for me to plug in the sensor - According to the loom I have off a Xantia I have a red plug which is connected to the temp sensor - Where is the other end of the plug in the loom - do I have to pull the door card off to locate it?

Cheers

Joel
