Hi guys, Would like to wish you all a happy new year and hope to clarify a little problem i have with the old banger (no not my wife, the car!)
After coming to a stop at junctions etc, i get a slight noise (sort of clunk) and it seems to be coming from the drivers wheel area, i think it may be the cv joint but just wondered if this is a common problem. I'm planning on changing the driveshaft as about 6mths ago i managed to brake an engine mount and wondered if the engine dropping has damaged the shaft or cv joint. its not yet a major problem but i can see it costing money if it breaks or collapses whilst out n about.
The noise is on pick-up not stopping.
Many thanks for your time and advice guys
Andy
BTW its 99 2.0 hdi if that makes any difference.

Re: noise from wheel area on pick-up
Sounds like a knackered ball joint or similar to me. Does the car wander at all under acceleration/braking?
Re: noise from wheel area on pick-up
Not that i've noticed, it almost feels like its taking up slack first then it locks into drive, its quite minor but does annoy the hell out of me.

Re: noise from wheel area on pick-up
I'd still jack the front corner up and wiggle the wheel around and check for slack as it does sound more like a ball joint/track rod end being knackered and needing replaced. If it was the CV joint, you'd notice a clicking noise on full lock as opposed to a clunk when coming to/starting from a stationary position. Unless the CV joint is totally buggered and doesn't rotate freely when turning slowly, but then I'd expect it to alter with your speed as opposed to just clunking once. Could also be the front subframe bolts loose/missing. I had this on an old 405 Mi16 I bought once... Not scary in the slightest... honest!

Re: noise from wheel area on pick-up
Just to update what this problem was,
I managed to break another (number 2!!) engine mount. the bolts had sheared and was only being held on one bolt.
Down the scrappy (my new best mate) and got a full mount for £15. job done no clunking
It may just be useful for advice fior anyone else hearing noises from the engine!!
It was something i never thought of checking>
