Tyre buying suggestions

Post by mjb »

OK so I've decided I want to put a couple of decent tyres on the front of my coupe and I've decided on Uniroyal 'Rainsport 2's following reading stacks of glowing reviews. Unfortunately the only place I've found that sells them locally (National Tyres) can't get them in 215x55x16W until the end of January

Does anyone have any suggestions on alternative, perhaps online, places I can get a pair from?

I wouldn't rule out Kuhmos (Khumo's?) at the moment having bought some for her Astra - the reviews mostly said that they're 'as good as' any premium brand. I think they're an OE tyre supplier too?

The reviews I've read of these Uniroyal's have been absolutely head and shoulders above anything else, so I'm pretty excited about trying a pair

I think in the meantime I might get a pair of Firestone TZ300s fitted (my current ones are truly awful and pretty scary in this weather!) and when I can get the Uniroyals, I'll have a summer and winter set... Won't cost much to get them changed round at quick-sh*t or national will it?

I've heard you can't change tyres between wheels that many times before they start to get damaged. Not sure if it's true but might be worth checking out. Why not get some real winter tyres? It sounds like they'd be useful just now

I just got 2 new Pirelli P6000's 195 65 15 V's for £120 all in fitted at home from etyres. I didn't have to go anywhere. Some bloke just came in a long wheelbase Sprinter, balanced and fitted them. I was quoted a few quid more at my local KF & National.

They are doing Firestone TZ300's 195/65R15H at £58 all in fitted at your door.

Can you get Bridgestone Turanzas in the UK - got a set on the 406 atm! Well priced and fairly decent!

I also rate Yokohama C-Drives as well - very good for the money!

MJB they sound like good tyres have been doing bit of research myself. When the passat needs some new rubber I will be getting prices for them. Only problem passat rubber is 235/45/17's so not going to be cheap to replace

I run 235/45/17's on the rear on the 406. Got 3 part worn tyres from eBay for 99p so they're not all that expensive! :D

That's still £40 less than one OE Pirelli for the 407  my sphincter nearly prolapsed when I heard that, but only some Volvo V70s and 5 cyclinder Mundanos use the same size, so that's their justification for charging loads. Which i think is bollarks myself.

I braced myself when the 308 needed new rubber (225/50 17) but most were ciming in abround the £70 mark, so I was pleasantly surprised.

I'd never touch a second hand tyre unless I'd trusted the owner (someone like my dad) or it had been professionally inpected by x-Ray, which they can do. As much as £150 a boot is painful, it's a lot less painful than unexpectedly dying.

Aye, someone at work's got a new Mondeo with the "sport" (ha!) pack which includes 18" wheels. Think she paid something like £210/corner for new rubber

Oh sh*t. I've just bought a car with 18" wheels  Bugger! I should have thought about that...

Was looking at Mundanos before I went for the Pug, remember reading advice to avoid the ones with 16" wheels - harsh ride, worse handling & many instances of new rims needed after minor pot-hole type bumps.
