Brake warning light & speedo failure

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Brake warning light & speedo failure

Post by gt6uk »

Hi, yesterday morning when i started my X reg HDi i had the bleep and the brake fluid level low warning on the display. I thought it was the handbrake switch playing up again but noticed the Red brake warning light on the dash was lit up. When i set off i noticed the speedo is not working but when i touch the brake pedal it works, but straight back to zero when i stop touching the brake pedal. Has anyone any ideas of what could be the problem? Two days before the bottom engine mount gave up the ghost but at least i know whats wrong with that and what i have to do to fix it.

I presume you actually checked your brake fluid :?: That do sound like a wiring fault.

The wiring to the pad wear sensors is only 'live' when the stop lights are on - this and your description makes me think you have problems with the connectors onto the instrument pod, (or something similar) and the alternate feed you're getting via the pad wear wiring is just enough to work your speedo.
