A STANGE PROBLEM

Post by aa410c »

Having recentley had the cambelt and water pump changed on my 1996 1.9td i seem to have a new problem.
I noticed almost immediatly that when i go into 5th gear there is a noteable rumbling noise and the gear stick shakes. When i put the clutch in or go into neutral the noise goes away. The odd thing is that it only does it in 5th,all other gears are smooth and and i have no problems with shifting into any gear.
I dont understand enough about how gearboxes work to say what it might be. does anyone have any ideas.???

I'd guess your top engine mount didn't like being disturbed and has died, specifically I'd guess it's the bush in the torque reaction link (the part of the mount that goes back towards the bulkhead)

I am totally surprised by your reply. I have it in my head that it is a gearbox problem. i.e the 5th gear has gone and i need to have the box rebuilt.?????
Can you elaborate on this as i like the sound of having the top mount replaced as opposed to a new gearbox

I cant give you a reason why,but in my experience,i would second the top engine mount being worn,or maybe the mounting bolts being loose.

First off, it's only a guess.

In high gears, your engine is pushing against a hard to move driveshaft, so it will want to twist itself around more, and the torque reaction link is about the only thing stopping it from doing so

Does the problem exhibit itself in 5th when you take your foot off the accelerator in gear?

The first time I ever had a garage do anything to a car (cam belt on BX) they left the wheel bolts undone :frown: It could have been worse, I had a mate who had his brakes done, they left the bolts holding the caliper on loose and it came off at speed. It wrecked the wheel but he managed to avoid a disaster. I think it was Twit Fick actually...
