Hi & welcome :)
From my experience, the 110 hdi is quicker & just as economical as the 90 bhp.Though dont rule out a good clean 90 bhp over a tired/worn 110 bhp.
Mine is the last of the 406`s,110 hdi SE est.Loads of toys on it,& half leather.Very good on the motorway,comfortable,45mpg + average. My front tyres last 22k miles +,clutch is still going strong, concidering the amount of caravan towing we do & remap to 140 bhp.I found the ride hard after having a Xantia, but my dads old 406 90 hdi with 15" wheels was a bit softer than mine with its 16" wheels & 55 profile tyres.
Engine management/pollution warning is quite common. Can just be a engine sensor,or in my case dirty fuel.Hdi`s need good clean fuel, diesel, not veg oil ect.
The electric fuel pump under the back seats on top of the fuel tanks can give issues, but its not expensive to replace,or difficult to replace your self.
French electrics   Sensors ectI`ve been lucky with mine so far.My dad had it from new,& i got it at 3 yrs old with 56k miles. Now 6 yrs old with 118k miles.Serviced every 10k miles with good quality semi syn 10/40 oil.Apart from a few sensor probs its never let me down.

Welcome in mate! :)
I wouldn't worry so much about the Bsi, the main things to look out for are:
Condition of lift pump, when was cam belt changed, pulleys etc, check for water damage to the multiconnectors in the drivers footwell as this has odd results!
There are loads of Hdi owners here so I'm sure they'll be along with more advice!
