D9 Coupe wipers fault.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

D9 Coupe wipers fault.

Post by gingerscotsman »

Hello.

I have a rather strange fault that is making it difficult for me to sell my 406 coupe. The window wipers have stopped working. They do not work in any position. The fuses however are fine. I belive as my car is a D9 these are BSI controlled. Tried the BSI reset and that did not work. Battery was low so I charged it. Still no change.

Anyone seen anything similar or have any suggestions? I need to fix them so it passes the MOT.

Check whether the motor is getting power when switched on. At least that will diagnose whether the motor is at fault or not. If not that, then I'd suspect the stalk, although not too sure on how the COM2000 stuff works,

I checked over the electrics today. There are 4 wires going to the wiper motor. One is earth, one is a constant 12V. The other two remain dead and do not change state with wiper stalk position.

From my very limited CANBUS knowledge that suggests to me stalk or some problem on the BSI itself? Does this sound right to you guys?

Are you getting power at the fuses?

your problem is similar to mine on an HDI exec Estate, what you need to do is put a live feed on the wiper connectors to see if the wipers do work to eliminate fault on the wiper motor.if the wipers do work then you need to test the wiper stalk to check if there is a positive feed there on the wires to eliminate that its not the wiper stalk switch which is at fault.otherwise it seems there is no communication between the BSI unit and the wipers themselves.for the wipers to work there should a signal send to the BSI and it reacts by making the wipers work
to me the only option is to take it to the dealer so that they can actuate the wipers with the bsi unit so that there is communication between the 2.i only resolved mine by taking it to the dealer and paid £120 for them to do it.bite the bullet mate and take it to the dealer thats your only option if you are saying all the fuses are ok from the passenger compartment and the engine fuses as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will have a go again when I have some light (probably the weekend as its always dark when I get in).

I was hoping to avoid taking to the stealers. They have had enough money out of me for now I think. Still, probably will make more back when I sell the car with a fresh MOT.

Does anyone have any wiring diagrams for this?

First off, check the fuse and relay.

Then go to http://images.google.co.uk and search for "com2000". If your stalks don't look like that, you probably just need to drop £15 on a new wiper stalk on ebay, then spend 5 minutes fitting it. Piece of cake.

If you do have a COM2000, go to the dealer and ask them to test the wipers and COM2000. If they plug their pp2000 in and can activate the wipers, then you'll more than likely need a new COM2000, but they can also test that to make sure it's faulty not the BSI or a wiring fault. There's a couple of forum members that also have the ability to do this, so it may be worth you saying what part of the country you're in

COM2000 doesn't speak CAN. It speaks VAN to the BSI over the body bus. The BSI will then switch the wiper motor relay (IIRC).
