When working on the car today I noticed that the cooling fans run all the time, even when cold.
After playing with the A/C I've found that when in ECO mode the fans stop, is this normal.
I must add that the sensor in the w/mirror is reading 25c (got a new one but not fitted it yet).

Re: Cooling fans
Probably, the A/C on mine seems to do the same. I can hear them slow down when I stop the engine.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.

Re: Cooling fans
ECO = off. Not sure if the fans should be running all the time tho.

Re: Cooling fans
Sorry should have explained bettor, when the climit control is in AUTO and the temp setting is high the cooling fans are on (but only at low speed) all the time, even with a cold engine, but once I put it in ECO mode they go off.

Re: Cooling fans
That is exactly what it should do. It's to keep the condensor for the aircon cool.

Re: Cooling fans
I can understand them running when it's calling for the A/C,
but in this weather with the heating on max, they are still running.
Shorly this is not right.

Re: Cooling fans
No, it's still running, it'll be drying out the inside your car. If you want to turn it off permanently disconnect the a/c compressor. Get ready with a sponge...
And don't call me Shorly?
*Incidentally this is not recommended for a D9 as condensation inside the car will condense on anything cold, like the inside of the windows and the circuit boards inside the BSI...

Re: Cooling fans
AC is used to dehumidify as well as cool down. If the climate control detects it's excessively humid inside the car (which it will be in this weather, unless you're wearing a divers breathing apparatus) it'll fire up the ACmark21TD wrote:I can understand them running when it's calling for the A/C,

Shorly this is not right.
When the humidity has dropped to a comfortable level, it'll turn the AC off and just pulse it on when it needs to maintain a comfortable environment.
Running with the climate control set to windscreen demist will ALWAYS cause the AC to run because dry air clears the screen much faster than without the AC.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
