2.1TD - Noisy Turbo

Post by Tim »

Hi all

In the last couple of days my engine/turbo has suddenly progressed from the usual whistling to a very noticeable louder whistle/shriek (almost an electric motor at full chat in sound!)

It still drives with no noticeable loss in power, so I've had to come to the conclusion that the turbo bearings are probable dying/dead.

Is the car still safe to drive - if the turbo does pack up is that going to cause any loss in control or just kill the power?

How much of a job is turbo replacement on a 2.1TD? I've replaced the exhaust so familiar with its awful positioning, but is there any other ancillaries i will need to do?

Cost?

Thanks all

Tim

Hmm could be a split in a hose or one of the pipes.

When my turbo in the Accord CDTI "failed" it was also producing a very loud whistle for which I was quoted £2k from the dealers  Needless to say, I had it written off by insurance but to this day I am still wondering whether it was some simple split hose as opposed to turbo bearings going belly up.
