Where have my gears gone?

Post by Mountain »

It's all happening this month!
-
Completely lost my gears now. I presume it's the linkages.
Everything attached at the gearbox end, so it has to be the gearstick end. I've had a look underneath and it seems like everything is in the way....well seems to be above the cat.
-
Anyone done these on the 2.1TD?
I'm thinking of cutting my losses this time and letting a garage do it if it's too much of a pain.
If I can manage to get it into 3rd at the gearbox end I might be able to limp the 15miles to the garage I trust.
-
Bloody hell, I was all ready for the the MOT this week........

I thought the 2.1TD used wires for the gears and not linkages? :? Could just be the V6's I suppose but they run the same gearbox. So is the gearstick just able to move around freely in all directions, like a spoon in a bowl of porridge?

Yeah, they are cables and boxed in at the gearstick end.
Are there just the 2 I can see at the gearbox?
Can move the gearstick backwards and forwards but not side to side

That probably means the side to side one's broke :(

Yeah, I think I felt it go.

Just been having a look by torchlight at the gear selectors at the gearbox end with a plan to try to find 3rd gear.
There is one quite hefty horizontal selector that moves back and forth and a small vertical one that doesnt move much at all. I'm not quite sure how the movements pair up with the gearstick though.
I'm thinking holding the small one in position whilst moving the horizontal one forward might get 3rd. Although I'm sure it will have to be trial and error to find it.
If I can get 3rd, I can get to the garage without causing too much of a hold up.....trouble is I have to drive through Leeds LOL.

I'm not understanding why I can only move the gearstick back and forth though. Surely a broken 'sideways' cable wouldn't stop it moving sideways? :?

It wouldn't move the gear change sideways, so if the selector is between 1&2 and 3&4, moving it backwards and forwards hits the block in between the two gears. That's my theory anyway.

Anyone ever changed these?
-
The garage reckon they can't find these anywhere in Europe
They also say the whole unit has too be replaced.....gearlever, selection box, cables. They say this has to be bought as a complete unit.
The price also seems to be going up by the hour....which is strange as they apparently can't find the parts.
-
I get the impression that they are attempting to string me along. I did point out the cables are for sale on ebay with the same parts number as stated on my Peugeot parts discs.
-
I am tempted settle up, drive it home and source the parts myself

Looks like the cables are available separately but you have to buy the remote housing complete with lever and cables...

2444 L7
LONG 1130 (Passage)
- INJECTION ES9J4 AND GEARBOX ML SINCE DATE 19981005
- TURBO DIESEL XUD11BTE AND GEARBOX ML SINCE DATE 19981005
- TURBO INJECTION XU10J2TE AND GEARBOX ML SINCE DATE 19981005

2444 N0
LONG 1123 (Selection)
- TURBO INJECTION XU10J2TE AND GEARBOX ML SINCE DATE 19981005
- INJECTION ES9J4 AND GEARBOX ML SINCE DATE 19981005

Hope that helps. I presume it's the passage cable you need.

Cheers

And there was me thinking it would be a simple job for an independent Pug garage. I'm just not buying the guy's speil.....but I have an almost pathological mistrust of garages...the lies they tell

These are the cables. Put my vin into servicebox.

2444 L7

2444 N0

He was saying £140 yesterday, now it's up to £200+ VAT. I presume that'll be £300 with labour. I can buy a donor car for much less than that.

Doh! At least you've got a few cars to look at now if you end up at the breaker's. Did SB give you a price? I just got that "massage incontinent" thing again, mine's in HR Kuna anyway (and usually about 1 1/2 times the price :( )

Nah, I get the same.
Pity, but I'll phone a few places tomorrow to see if I can get an *actual* price.
