2.1 diesel wont start
came to car this morning and she wont start
had a mess and have fuel up to the pump[lucus] but not at the injectores so called aa out and still no joy,his computer wouldnt talk to my car electrics.
he manged to get the car to fire breifly as the pump clicked in once but died straight away
so anyone any ideas? my local diesel place says 100 to diagnose and about 900 for a pump but cant look at it till next week
so could be ecu,electrics,pump etc
the good news
finally got a job start tomorra at 6 am 15 mile away, isnt life great?

Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
I'd suggest sticking a multimeter over the pump terminals - if you get power then it's probably time for a new (or 2nd hand!) pump
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
hi took the cover of the pump and there must be 20 wires there which ones should have power? also will the pump have to be progamed to the ecu?mjb wrote:I'd suggest sticking a multimeter over the pump terminals - if you get power then it's probably time for a new (or 2nd hand!) pump
thanks

wouldnt know what to do with all the wires
Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
If you do need a replacment pump I have one

I have done the 1.9 Bosch convertion on mine but it's not a straght forword job and has it's problems.
The first thing I would do is have someone turn the engine over while you keep pumping the priming bulb as the 2.1 can be a bugger if it's got air in the system, or you could rig up a temp fuel supply straght to the pump, hold it above the pump with the ingition on and open the bleed valve and let it bleed by gravity.
The fact that it run (if only for a stort time) sugestes that the pump is OK.
Do you have a key pab immobalser ? as these can be a problem.

Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
I had this issue intermittently on mine and I never did get it sorted. However, the prime suspect was the immobiliser failed to deactivate. I took the key out and back in and it normally started after a few attempts. Was quite intermittent...

Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
Glad it's all sorted mate,
might be worth changing the fuel filter as a percourtion (if thats how you spell it) as when they start to block up it will pull in air.

is it a simple job on this or do you have to be carefull as i belive the petrol ones are iffy?
Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
Yep. Change the fuel filter. Also have you drained the water that collects in the bottom of it lately?

I had a similar problem. Not with the starting but with it dying when I gave it some ooomph. Basically, the crap in the fuel filter clogs it when you use more fuel....oh, and be warned, the one listed at halfrauds for the 2.1TD is wrong.
-
My 405 used to be a bugger for not staring due to air in the lines though. It would happen when my tank was low and I was throwing it around corners. If it sucked a bit of air in before I parked up it wouldn't start in the morning. Took me a while to figure that one out. If it didn't start it would be a couple of minutes 'squeezing the bulb'.
It doesn't take much air to cause problems.

Re: 2.1 diesel wont start
The 2.1 uses the same fuel filter as the 1.9.
To change it, first undo the water bleed valve (put a container under the pipe to catch the fuel) then pump the bulb to shift any crap that may be blocking it, then take the top off the filter houseing, at this point the fuel should drain into the container and not all over the engine, remove the filter and replace with new one (make sure you put the rubber seal on the new filter), it's a good idea to fill it with fuel before putting the top back on but make sure you close the bleed valve first, once the top is back on prime the fuel system and start the engine, job done
