Immobiliser fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Immobiliser fault

Post by rapierKen »

First fault in ages for me. Car has done 184900 now. Went to Gatwick and back today, left car for 2 hours then it wouldn't start. Came up with "Immobilser Fault". Used the search facility on here and found zilch on D9's.
Disconnected battery for ten minutes-nothing
Tried spare key-nothing
Reset BSI (clutching at straws)-nothing
Still got the key symbol and display warning
Called the double A on the girlfriends card.
When he looked at it the immobiliser warning had gone but wouldn't start.
He plugged inthe OBD2 interface and said "aha!" Pressed the inertia switch under the bonnet and it started. :D
He asked if I'd had an accident or bump recently which I haven't and also said if you slam the doors it can do this.
I have had a problem with the front passenger door central locking recently and a good slam has cured it. Maybe this has caused the problem.
Cheaper than taking it to Peugeot.
Gave the fella a drink for his diagnosis tho!
Might replace the immobiliser transponder ring tho as this can cause a problem.

Tried it today and it comes up with immobiliser fault but starts ok. I'll see if I can get a new ring for the immobiliser and report back. :cheesy:

Well I've still got the immobiliser fault, but this time it won't start at all.
Changed the antenna to no avail.
Had a Peugeot guy out who recoded the keys and checked everything. Resetting the Bsi via his puter let it start once. Now it refuses to recognise both keys.
He said it's either a wiring fault which can take 3 hours to do a full pin out test or the Bsi and as I have a problem with the auto wipers which is cured by tapping the Bsi it looks like it's time for a recon Bsi.
About £120 from bba-reman.com (trade) 5 to 8 days tho!

Mine did something similar this morning - got in quick, turned key on before shutting door & it beeped & displayed, "ENGINE IMMOBILISER FAULT".

Turned off, removed key, closed door properly, then put the key in & it started 1st time with no problem :?

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

That sometimes happens when the key hasn't been in the ignition long enough for the car to recognise it

Finally got the BSi back last week. Got it programmed on tuesday and it works.
To be fair the recon co. closed over christmas and had a few people off sick as well as a healthy workload!
They "virginalised" it so it had to be reset with the key codes. Only off the road for 6 weeks!
Total cost about £210.
2 x £40 reprogramming
£130 to fix the BSi.

Well it's been two weeks and 2000 miles and the immobiliser came on again!
Got passed it once then it stayed on.
I remembered the techie telling me that the Bsi talks to the engine ECU and if there is any fault with the return info it will flag up the immobliser.
I unplugged the engine ECU and reconnected it and the fault dissappeared. Happened a few times now so a quick off and on with the connector and it works.
Cleaned all the conntacts with contact cleaner today so i will keep my fingers crossed.

Right, done over a thousand miles since cleaning the engine ECU pins and wiring socket and it's cured the problem.
My car has always been sluggish but seems to go a bit better now and the mpg for alround driving is around 45ish.
could cleaning with contact cleaner have improved this or it just wishfull thinking?
