406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
Hello everyone!
I've been scanning this forum the last week or so trying to read up on what could be causing the various fault's I've got and am now at a dead end so any suggestions would be gratefully received.
The car is a 1999 'T' 406 LX 1.8i D9
When it was bought it had "Braking Failure" and "ABS Failure" on the MFD and the Dashboard lights flickered on and off when the ignition was off, when the car was first started it took 5 to 10 minutes for the Dash Pod to 'warm up' and the Mileage, Indicator flashers and indicator 'clicking' to work.
Checked all the earth points, and eventually replaced the BSI/ECU and all the locks with a known working 2nd hand replacement.
This didn't fix the problem, so today replaced with Dashpod as well, the dashboard now works fine however on removing the faulty dash pod, noticed that several bulbs had thoughtfully been removed from it by the previous owner, and I now fitting the new one I know why! -
1) The AIRBAG light stays on and flashes - (checked connections under the seats they all seem ok, so fault finding on-going)
2) the handbrake warning light and ABS light stays on and flashes (This ties up with the MFD messages and again I've read the various threads on here about that just not looked at fixing it yet.
Since fitting the pod I only get "ABS Failure" and "Braking Failure" when first starting the car - it seems to have stopped coming up randomly on the MFD as you are driving along so I assume that was down to a 'failsafe' as the dash pod warning bulbs had been taken out.
Main issues now are:
1) the Climate Control Heater panel stays illuminated when the ignition is switched off for at least a good 5 minutes, before it goes out, then when it comes back on it has 'reset' back to: 20.5 degrees, Auto, A/C, and Feet Ventilation, regardless of what it was last set to - It didn't do this prior to the ECU and BSI and Dash Pod being replaced
Also there seems to be a humming noise sometimes from that area of the dash prior to starting the car, can't decide if its radio feedback (even with radio off) or the A/C motor or heater blower having a mind of its own.
Other than that it works fine.
I should mention that the only thing I've done in this area is remove the Radio (to get the model numbers etc off it to get it recoded to the VIN of the New ECU) and put the radio back in.
2) Windscreen Wipers, With ignition on but engine not working, pushing up one click turns them on, and pushing down one click immediately stops them. With engine running, any position just starts them going and when you push down to off, they go for 9 swipes then park randomly. I've read the threads about this likely being the windscreen wiper motor but it was fine before the BSI/ECU change, so the motors either unbelievably chosen that moment to fail or could I have disturbed something/is it likely to be anything else?
Other trivial things I've noticed, but I'll mention in case they could be connected:
The Dashpod "STOP" light is never illuminated on the replacement pod (bulb ok) but did flash on the faulty pod, The "fuel filler open" light is not illuminated (not sure its fitted on this model but there appears to be a switch in the filling neck of the fuel pipe) and the indicators do not work without the engine running.
Also the interior light does not work off the manual switch without the ignition on (works fine and as it should do when opening the doors), and the Cig Lighter and electric windows do not work without the ignition on (may be standard Peugeot functionality??)

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
Also one last thing - Anyone have a link to a correct Fuse Diagram for the under dash fuses because i'm not convinced the one in the owners handbook is in anyway correct, I found another link of the web based off the VIN number and that doesn't seem right either!
Anyway a Mammoth first post! :-) - Thanks for reading!

Maybe you picked up another duff BSI
Have a search for BSI reset, worth a try. I think the other stuff with the abs and airbags could be unrelated, cross that bridge when you come to it. The other thought is maybe the connectors under the carpet are damp.

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
If by BSI reset you mean the standard battery disconnect, 3 minutes drivers window down, headlights on and all that malarky
I've done that every time I've worked on the car. The carpet connectors in the drivers footwell was the first thing I checked back when I bought the car, and they were bone dry, checked them yesterday again just in case and they all seem fine.
The Haynes manual refers to an earthing point on the R/H Front Strut which I can't find, and also one L/H Rear Luggage Compartment which I couldn't find either so those haven't been checked.
I'm with you on the Airbag/Abs being unrelated.
Cheers.

Could be a problem with one of the airbags. A diag session at a dealer will tell you which one it thinks is shotBykerMz wrote:1) The AIRBAG light stays on and flashes - (checked connections under the seats they all seem ok, so fault finding on-going)
Pull it out and check the wiring, especially to the stereo. Every 406 I've seen has had a car kit fitted, usually very very badly. Also if an aftermarket stereo's been fitted make absolutely sure it's not connected to any of the VAN bus lines in the power ISO connector. That WILL severely mess with all the onboard electrical systems and risks BSI damage.1) the Climate Control Heater panel stays illuminated when the ignition is switched off for at least a good 5 minutes,
That's how it's supposed to work. The fuse socket for the cig lighter has 3 slots. If you move the fuse to use the other slot the socket will have a permanent live feed. Same with the stereo fuseAlso the interior light does not work off the manual switch without the ignition on (works fine and as it should do when opening the doors), and the Cig Lighter and electric windows do not work without the ignition on (may be standard Peugeot functionality??)

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
Airbag light fixed after messing with some connections under the drivers seat. It started revving randomly the other day so cleaning out idle stepper motor has fixed that one.
I've located the cig lighter fuse and moved it, and also now worked out the fuse diagram - (the D9 doesn't appear to have the same fuse setup for the radio mind you)
Climate Control Panel - I've just realized after some research that the replacement BSI came off a car with manual heater controls and an Air/Con button - could this be the reason for the strange operation of the panel, is there an option in the BSI that needs to be set by a main stealer to tell it that the digital panel is fitted?
Wipers - Decided must be a co-incidence, so have ordered a replacement wiper motor.
Only thing outstanding is finding someone to re-code the radio to the new bsi-vin - anyone know how much peugeot charge?

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
Also can anyone confirm that the D9 indicators only work with the engine running?
Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
with the ignition on (or at least the key in the aux position)BykerMz wrote:Also can anyone confirm that the D9 indicators only work with the engine running?
The hazards should work regardless

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
something else that nots quite right then as my hazzard work regardless , but indicators don't work unless engine is actually running - not something I'll be wasting time to fixing mind you!

That's more or less how it's supposed to work, although the indicators should work with the ignition on but engine not running tooBykerMz wrote:something else that nots quite right then as my hazzard work regardless , but indicators don't work unless engine is actually running - not something I'll be wasting time to fixing mind you!

Re: 406 D9 - Various Electrial Gremlins.
Time for an update!
Climate control panel staying on (just needed the BSI telling it was there) and Radio beeping was sorted by a nice man with Planet 2000 leaving me £40 lighter!
Wipers not parking and stopping randomly etc all the signs of a faulty wiper motor or switch or maybe even BSI fault?
Well it turned out to be that Fuse 27 the BSI +ve fuse in the box was empty and that the 5amp fuse was in Fuse 26 (spare unused position) - Now the wipers work, and the indicators and windows also work with the ignition in the aux position and the "Stop" light now comes on as it should with the ignition in Aux, so probably worth checking if you wipers start acting up before you change the motor.
The only remaining fault now is "Braking Warning" and "ABS Warning" on the MFD.
BTW, As I have access to Planet 2000 software and a laptop, is there a cheaper generic OBDII interface that will work with Planet 2000 such as an ELM unit? rather than buying the more expensive Lexia unit?
Random revving it was still doing although not as bad very intermittent, but I've yet to see if putting the bsi fuse back in the right place has sorted it.

Great - Don't suppose anyone knows where I can get a circuit diagram for the lexia or what EPROMS etc it uses?
