Key Remote & Windscreen Washers

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Key Remote & Windscreen Washers

Post by Scotte »

Hi - i have a 2002 406 HDI - it went to the garage to have the fuel drained as someone put petrol in it.... oooops.... (not me!!).. anyway when it came back the windscreen washers and remote key doesnt work... I have fitted a new washer pump and checked the fuse still no joy... also does anyone know the correct way to programme the key as I think it may just need this to be done??

If you have the card, that is what all your transponder codes etc are on.
Usually you take it to the main stealer and they charge you about £50 to reprogramme the key to the transponder - however, I am pretty sure after the incident where I flushed my keys down the toilet and had to get a new key  there are auto locksmiths out there that you could probably take the car to and they'd do it for a lot less. 8)

For the remote, surely it's a case of re- synchronising, which has been covered many times on here, and should also be in your handbook if you have it

Thanks I have tried to re-sync the key via the handbook by turning ignition on and holding button etc but this doesnt work. I have read that you may need to dis-connect the battery for one minute on some 406's... so what does the code card do then, is this just for dealers to code the car and key?

The code is what the dealer/factory uses to permanently initialise a new key to the car's ECU.

Every time you press a key button, the message the key sends to the car changes according to the above code... The car has to count ahead a few iterations of this and compares it to what your key has sent. If it matches great... otherwise it'll need re-synchronising. This is where the key and the car both decide where in the sequence they are, but if the key's using a different permanent code, it won't be able to generate the correct number sequence the car's looking for and thus won't work

I did a better version of the above before, but I'm a bit too knackered at the moment to come up with a better way of explaining it... Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Time_Password for an idea of a similar mechanism
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
