1999 406 GLX estate Clutch problem

Post by Mellers »

Hi all. I've just bought my first 406 and I love it. It's a 1999 on a T, 2.0 GLX Estate. My only real concern at the moment is that it is difficult to pull away smoothly because the clutch feels juddery as I lift it. Once away it's fine and doesn't seem to be slipping. The release is quite near the top and it seems to get worse the longer the run. It is less noticable when I first start up and pull away.

Any advice please?

Cheers,
Mel

Sounds like the classic worn Dual Mass Flywheel. Tell-tale signs are also a sharp squeek when you start the engine and a squeek/chatter as you bring the clutch in and out.

Mine was the same year/engine and did this for 3 years and was even slipping after an hours' run. You can learn to live with it, or replace the lower rear engine mount helps quite a bit, or do that and replace the clutch assembly with a solid flywheel conversion.

A proper DMF/clutch job will probably be around £600.00

A 'conversion' perhaps £450.00?? others may be able to confirm.

The 406 clutch is a laour intensive job but, as I said, you may well be able to live with it for the time being.

In case you didn't know the DMF was fitted by Peugeot (and most manufacturers now) to dampern the rough nature of the diesel engine to reduce vibration through the drive train (which conversely it ends up creating anyway  )

Welcome btw.

Can't remember if that had a cable or hydraulic clutch? If it's a cable, it's probably the cable that's your culprit. :o

Usually the cause on mine... I'll be more specific and suggest the top (pear-shaped) mount, £20 or so

I know, all that stuff I typed - and for nothing :( and I can't help with the petrol clutch either

And there's nothing wrong with being 'quick' - it's not what you do with it it's how quick you..err wait...it's not how small it is it's the...err...bugger :|

Just changed my clutch cable yesterday on my 97 1.9td GLX due to juddering while pulling away and it's like driving a new car !

Pretty easy to do if you have an axle stand 3 hands and very flexible arms (I got wedged in the footwell trying to hook the new cable on to the pedal :cheesy: )

If yours is cable not hydraulic I'd give it a try before you spend big money
