HELP with engine replacement needed!

Post by pricey2k9 »

Hi all, im new to the forum and would like some advice please if possible, Ive just bought a 2002 (52)plate peugeot 406 hdi lx 110 which has bent valves due to timing belt snapping. I am looking to change the engine but have been told by several mechanics that the replacement engine must be from a 406 hdi of the same year due to the ECU etc
If somebody could shed some light on this for me it would be much appreciated.
Thanks again Pricey

Hi & welcome 8)

Don't know the answer to your specific question, but I would have thought that any 110 HDi would work with your ECU. In the unlikely event it refuses to work with the injectors or any of the sensors, you've still got a complete set on your own engine.

Maybe somebody else knows more?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Ok, let's start with basics, as buying a whole new engine is a bit drastic before any proper diagnosis is done.

The first thing to do, is remove the cylinder head, and ascertain the level of damage. If it's limited to the head (valves) only, and the pistons are OK, then why not repair the head, and put it all back together with a new head gasket.

This is a much easier approach which would be much more do-able, at home.

Where are you mate? I am a Vauxhall man really, but have recently got a 406 110 HDi, - I would happily get involved, if you DIY... as I'd be keen to take one of these apart :cheesy:

The valves dont bend on the HDI engines as they are flat against the piston, you will have just damaged the followers and possibly the cam, piston and/or crank damage is rare so pull the head off and have a look first to assess it, you can pickup good hdi heads on ebay for about £100 complete with cams and valves and everything ready to bolt straight on

I had the rockers done once by a local mechanic only for the same thing to happen again about 20 miles l8r. Im worried if Ido the rockers again the same thing is going to happen and its more money down the pan. Removing the head is a bit complex for me so Im stuck as to what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.

yes, although only one broke second time round I suspect valve damage due to the speed i was travelling at the time. I think something is causing the timing to slip. Ive heard the bottom pulley is common to wear, would this cause the problem im having. Cheers for quick reply.

Welcome in mate! :)
We've had cases of the crankshaft pulley breaking up, it would be worth checking as if it's started to give up there may be play and it's causing the belt to jump.

Can anybody help with my original question as im going to persist with the engine change? As I mentioned my mechanic has told me that the engines vary a lot in these cars and that the replacement must be from a car of the same year due to the camshaft/crankshaft sensor (different number of teeth) and something to do with ecu? can anybody make any sense of it for me? Cheers

If you do go for a new engine, can I buy the injectors out of your old one? :cheesy:

I am currently doing the same swap with my HDi 90, see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10114, for details of my saga.

From what I have learnt so far you are best off getting an engine with the same engine code, from a donor car that is the same model and year as your own. The engine code is three letters, eg RHY, and can be found within the chassis number or on the engine block just to the right of the oil filter. There may still be variations but that should lessen the chances of anything major being different.

Yes, the engine I require has the code RHZ and is the 110bhp type. I know mine has the bosch injection so will look for one the same in that respect. Will get one from a 2002 and just cross my fingers I suppose. Thanks for all replies guys.
