2000(W) 406 Rapier - horn symbol on indicator stalk ?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

2000(W) 406 Rapier - horn symbol on indicator stalk ?

Post by rfx »

Dear all,

This is a little related to my recent post to Bodywork - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10268 - so apologies for breaking any cross-posting guidance!..

Can anyone please advise why I have a horn symbol on my indicator stalk of my second-hand 2000(W) 406 Rapier when the horn is activated using the centre of the steering wheel? The button does nothing when pressed. Is this simply someone else's lazy repair/replacement work?

I was going to attach a picture of the stalk but the board says "quota reached" so the picture can be found at http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/759/image080g.jpg

Thanks,

Sean.

Is it possible that the original plastic bit at the end of the stalk snapped or was missing, and the previous owner just took a horn button from a D8 and put it there instead to fill the hole?

My D9 is an LX from 1999, and it has the horn on the airbag pad on the wheel, where your car's horn really is. I don't think any D9 has the horn on the stalk.

Alternatively, maybe the original stalk snapped or stopped working somehow, and the previous owner used a D8 stalk. The early D9s (late 1999, early 2000) weren't properly multiplexed, so the stalks may be partially compatible.

It does sound as though someone has fitted a D8 stalk, they were the same fitment up until the COM2000 units.
On a side note Sean if you enclose your photo in IMG tags it will display directly :)

nothing to worry about, someone has just fitted the stalk off an older model, if it all works (apart from the stalk horn) i would leave it well alone

Bitch !!! and i dont consider them to be fog lights imo they are
driving lights , fog lights used to be either tinted yellow or very
diffused , and as these lights are clear i consider they are there
to aid those amongst us with slightly failing eye sight and also
because of the higher speeds we travel at than the less fortunate
2.2 owners  :P :P :P

If your vision's bad enough for 406 foglights to help, then it's a bit more than slightly

Could explain the speed delusion though, as you may be struggling to see the speedometer.

I believe there are some 'upgrades' available with a scale that doesn't go up to 160, thus allowing bigger numbers, for the visually challenged

My guess is some previous owner has had a broken stalk and replaced it with a D8 one, as they didn't have the steering wheel buttons. I wouldn't worry about it :)

Lazy, no: cheap, yes.

Perhaps you could wire up one of those "awooga awooga" horns to it as an alternative :P
