Cruise Control

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cruise Control

Post by stumitch »

Hi all new member here,

Just bought a 1997 406 2.0 automatic with 65k miles on the clock but can't figure out how to switch the cruise control on, i have the stalk on the left hand side (mines a lhd car as i live in Spain) but can't figure how to switch it on. I did a bit of research and it said there's a button or something near the mirrors adjuster, can anybody take a picture of what i need to look at ??? Does the 97 SV model have CC and if it hasn't why is the stalk there ??

Thanks guys

Hello & Welcome 8)

There should be a push-button switch, next to the headlight height adjuster, which you push to engage and push again to turn off.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

You cant miss it!

Hey Matt, My CC on the coupe isnt working at the mo. Is it likely to be down to that pump switch I heard about over the brake pedal?

Something to note: CC requires a road speed over about 30-40mph and you must be in 3rd-5th. There are switches behind the brake and clutch pedals (just like the brake light switch) which disable the CC when the pedals are pressed. Pushing the accelerator does NOT cancel CC, but it doesn't change its target speed either.

The pedal switches are common faults and if you're fiddling with them, you should definitely check your brake lights before driving  . On the ES9J4 V6 you should *JUST* be able to hear a relay clicking behind the glovebox when you press the stalk to enable it. If you can hear that click, the pedals are fine. On both my V6s the fault was with the £20 valve between the air pump and the piston which pulls the wheel the accelerator cable's attached to. Unfortunately on the V6 the pump is extremely difficult to get to (in a sealed bag(!!!) on the n/s strut just behind the gearbox), and I found it easiest with the subframe off the car

It's possible to activate the cruise control on axle stands, but use 5th and keep the speed as low as you can. Your car will scream ABS FAULT at you though

No... Please forgive me for the slightly condescending question, but you're not looking at a stalk for the stereo are you?

I'll see if I can grab a quick pic of my switch tonight if I remember while it's still light

Best just to check it out when you're at the car this evening. If its not there then take some pics and we'll look at it then.

Cheers for the tip Matt

If you set yourself up an account on ServiceBox, the cruise control diagram will show you exactly where all the bits are.
(Helpfully, it shows a LHD D8/early D9 setup, not the comm2000 stalks like wot I've got).

Either that or some helpful soul might upload it to Photobucket & post the link....

I'd do it myself, but my home desktop PC's dead at the mo. & If I try it with the laptop, I'll wind up using it as a frisbee :x

What are we talking about here? Is it the button or the stalk we want pics of?

Button (#5):
http://www.peugeotpartscatalogue.co.uk/D8C/6/65N01A.HTM

Stalk (#4):
http://www.peugeotpartscatalogue.co.uk/D8C/6/62G01A.HTM

It'll be on the same side, RHD or LHD

Edit: Appleogies for putting image tags instead of url ones
