Driving me mad !!
Had my 406 GLX Estate now for just 3 weeks and by and large I love it. BUT. After a trip of about 30 odd miles in the rain a strange thing happened when I stopped the engine. The big STOP sign on the dashboard lit up and on the display panel it scrolled through several faults like ABS Fault, Oil Pressure Fault, Braking Fault and one or two others. As my journey was to the garage following my wife for her RAV4 (YUK) MOT, I thought no worries I'll get them to look at it. Now let me also say that it didn't prevent me starting the car or driving it and the only symptom that I spotted before I stopped was that the Temp guage went down to zero and the indicator arrows on the dashboard weren't working even though the indicators were. The garage put some test gear on and ran all kinds of diagnostics bur found no remedy. In the end they disconnected the battery for 30 seconds and that seemed to reset everything. That was Saturday. On Monday evening the same thing happened again after another 30 odd mile trip in the rain so I did the battery thing and all was well after. Yesterday the indicator bit happened again (which I ignored this time) but this morning, hey presto, they are working again.
I can't help feeling this is rain related because the first weekend I had the car I did a 150m round trip with no problems at all.
One last point, I did have a small leak around the roof aerial which the garage removed and resealed for me and that cured the leak.
Any help please coz it's starting to get on my boobies and spoiling my enjoyment of a great car.

WOW what a great post. Thinking about it, I did jet wash the car earlier in the week. I will be out side checking for 'wet carpets' later today.
Thanks for the reply.
If I can't find any 'wet carpets' is it possibly a fault with the engine management gizmo thingy?
( you can tell I'm Technical can't you )
Cheers

Your car is right in the middle so I'm not sure if it has a BSI, which are more likely to raise those sorts of issues than the engine ecu

Im pretty sure all D9's (regardless of being multiplexed or not) have a BSI.steve_earwig wrote:Your car is right in the middle so I'm not sure if it has a BSI, which are more likely to raise those sorts of issues than the engine ecu![]()

The handy thing is when you do figure out what part of the electrics cabling it is that is damp, It'll be an easy enough fix.

OK help me out here guys. D9, BSI?
I'm sorry but I'm a complete novice with all this so can you explain what these mean and tell me how to find out what my 406 has under the bonnet.

Ok. D8 Mk1 with slatted front grill and D9 Mk2 with honeycomb front grill & body coloured strip through rear light cluster.
Bsi stands for Body Systems Interface. It basically sends and receives commands to the various car systems over the VAN bus; basically this drastically reduces the number of wires in the loom.
If you want to find out what engine you have put your registration no into www.eurocarparts.co.uk and it will give you all the details.

Display panel showing faults... it's a D9steve_earwig wrote:But I'm not sure if it's a D9 (seems likely though)

All 406s are multiplexed to a certain degree...eoin27 wrote:Im pretty sure all D9's (regardless of being multiplexed or not) have a BSI.
All D9s have a BSI. The ones people refer to as being multiplexed are exactly the same, but with a COM2000 unit instead of the discrete stalks
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Driving me mad !!
Thanks for that.
I love this forum. Everyone is so helpful and so far I haven't noticed any 'in fighting' like there is on so many other forums.
I can't imagine that I'll ever be able to offer any insight on matters 406, but I'll try when I can.
Is there somewhere to post pics of our rides coz it would be cool to show you what I've bought.
P.S. The weird electrical hiccups continue to bug me, but I'm determined to find the cause.
