Remote key fob

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Remote key fob

Post by Japster »

I have just bought a 2002 406 hdi 90 and to be honest for the miles it has on and the cost of the car i feel i can spend a bit money on it. All locks when i bought it were spinning and after 4 days of spraying with penetrating oil these now work with the key and open and lock the car. The remote fob when i got it would only open the car so it wouldnt lock but after going to a scrapyard and butchering a mondeo remote fob i got the existing fob working well locking and opening the doors. I would like a spare though and after contacting the main dealers i come to the conclusion that they are robbing buggers and was wondering if firstly you can get after market fobs and do they actually need to go on the main dealers computer to code them in or do they have a button configuration to set the pairing between fob and car.

What did you use from the mondeo fob?

The main dealers are expensive but it is expensive everywhere you go for a key. If you buy one on ebay, you're going to still have to get it cut and programmed in. It might be a little cheaper but you're guaranteed a good fix if you just go to the dealer. Also, have you tried just getting a non-remote key? These are considerably cheaper.

Ooh, how much to reprogram as you're not all that far from me and I could do with a remote.

He said was cheaper than peugeot but didnt put himself on the spot, was a bit evasive today when i said i had bought key and for him to do job when it arrives, will wait till i receive the fob and then get back onto him and see how much cheaper he actually is. He also could be full of crap aswell though.

Recieved key fob today only to be told by lock guy that it has to go to peugeot  But the transponder and key blade from my old key have been fitted to the new one i just need it tuned into the alarm and locking system. I have read that if i put it in the ignition and turn the ignition on and hold the big button for 10 seconds this will tune it in. Is this true? As i say the key starts the car etc just wont open the locks remotely.
