Same here. It gives me the willies working under the car no matter how much support it's got. Especially when I've crawled under to the point that just my feet are showing!!
Aye. When I'm doing serious work I have the car supported on 2 axle stands, have a further 2 sitting below strategic strong points (like subframe bolts) where possible, and any wheels coming off ALWAYS go straight under
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
When I was much younger I had a narrow escape with a scissor jack and a Beetle so I've been much more careful ever since. If I'm going under the car I give it a good shake first, ok it might do some damage but at least I wasn't under there when it happened.
Incidentally, where is everyone's favourite place for stands under the back of the car? There's no problem on the front - jack in the middle of the subframe, stands to the sides of it, but on the back the lower arms are at an angle. Ok, the stands can go under the spring seats but where do you jack it then? Or jack under the spring seat and stand under the lower trailing arm, but that's just so narrow. I did try jacking under the lower arm but further in but the jack started slipping so I won't be doing that again. I keep thinking about the jacking points but I'm sure it'd just flatten them.
If I don't need much height I'll usually put the stands under the trailing arm pivot (front end of it), it sits neatly on the stand but doesn't give a huge amount of room under the car.
I always give the car a good shake before going under it too!

I'd forgotten that, the D8 has round trailing arms, the D9 has kind of triangular cast iron ones so it doesn't sit squarely on it.
