Decisions decisions

Post by gRoberts »

Hey everyone..

Well in a few months time, I will be getting rid of the D8 and looking at replacing her.

Despite the problems I've had with the 406 recently, I always liked the economy of the Pug diesels and I am finding it hard to beat it.

Now i've been looking at the MK3 Mondeo's as it kinda ticks all the boxes in a car I want. But the overall economy isn't as good as my 2.1 TD.

Any suggestions on a replacement pug/citroen? I would get another 406 but they didn't really update the interior on them in the D9's, and I find it rather boring.

Cheers

There's the 407 or the 607; both have the more modern HDi engines.

The 407 is supposedly the replacement for the 406, but there's been a lot of debate about its looks. I prefer how the 406 looks, but 407 owners who have had 406s previously have said the 407 is better made (less rattly).

The 607 is designed as a luxury car, and was originally sold with a fairly hefty price tag - the depreciation on them has been tremendous though, so you can pick up a 2nd hand one for under £5000, if you look long enough.

If you want to go for a brand new Peugeot, you may want to hold on for a few months, as the 508 is supposedly coming out this year.

I don't know anything about Citroens though, except that I don't like the way they look!

I only really mentioned Citroens because given most pug repair specialists/scrappy's also deal with Citroen's and I assume they share engines and what not, it might be worth venturing into the unknown.

That said, I love the 406 for what it is, it's a beautiful car, especially for it's age, but the interior just depresses me. I fancy something a bit more modern.

Cheers mate, i'll take look around at those.

Perhaps a 2003/4 D9 with a 110 HDi engine would suit. Their interiors are more updated with black/blue trim and half leather. I think they're still very fresh. The passat and mondeo dashes look more modern but I always felt that you look 'down' on them when you are a passenger. I prefer the layout and build of the pug dashes.

Supposedly? It is

I can vouch for the 607 but you wont return excellent fuel economy in any guise

The issue with 406, is that in general through from the first D8 to the last D9, the interior is, apart from bits that you can chop and change, is all the same.

I know this sounds pedantic, but I'd love to have a car with an interior like the new Vauxhalls but has the economy of the 406. Why they can't ace that I don't know.

What cheap, hard plastics? Neil had an insignia rental car the other day, I thought the interior was really nasty, it's gonna rattle like a kids toy :(

i know, i know :(

I think that's why I need people with sense to help me. I have a local pug/citroen specialist that charges next to nothing for my 406 repairs and when dropping off another car, he had a 607 that looked quite nice.

I've put off getting rid of the 406 because the amount of money it saves me on fuel, has yet to be beaten. Everyone's suprised when you mention 600+ miles a tank.

I may end up biting the bullet and just buying a D9. Question is, are the newer HDI's more, less or the same on reliability compared to the 2.1 TD?

The HDi's are extremely reliable engines when maintained properly. The only real issues are that the bottom pulley needs to be replaced every now and again as they have an automatic adjustment which turned out to be a bit of a flop really. Wear can be indicated with the tippex trick. The injector rail can fail but again, this will only happen if the car has a hard life. Both my D9's HDi's were still well into 150k on the original rails. Also watch out for EGR failure with excessive black smoke coming from exhaust.

600+ miles? You'll be looking at 750+ with the HDi :P

Im off to lemans on friday morning and i hope my tank of fuel will see us at least 950 miles as usual.

Hdis are good engines, as long as (like all engines) they have been maintained regularly and driven with care.

The number of faults we see at my work (main stealer PUG) with 407's has put me off owning one for life tbh.

Better the devil you know and all that.

Two pug dealers I know say that the 406 HDi is the best Peugeot ever made.
