Exhaust Bling

Post by highlander »

Hi all,

Due to the steadily worsening state of my exhaust, I've decided to replace it with a stainless steel exhaust. It's holier than Jesus Christ's Swiss Cheese, and it "grraawrrrls" very noisily when idle and "brrraaaaaaaaaps" very noisily whilst accelerating.

My new exhaust will be a custom-built PowerFlow system, which actually worked out cheaper than I was quoted for a replacement exhaust from Peugeot or from Kwik-Fit.

At any rate, that's happening next Monday (can't wait).

I've been told I can put whatever exhaust tip I want on it. Just wondering if anyone could give me some ideas? If you have a stainless steel exhaust or a custom exhaust tip, please let me see some pictures of it on your 406 so I can pick and choose one I like :)

Cheers
Graeme

Single round inwardly rolled 3" or 3.5" tailpipe would be my choice if made up from scratch. As it is I've got twin backboxes with letterbox upswept tailpipes atm, although they will be getting removed, shortened and refitted pointing downwards when I get mine fitted.

Hope they don't make it too noisy as that will annoy you.

I had one made for my Honda and even with fitting the biggest silencers they could it was far too noisy and had to come off (expensive mistake) mind you there's something about Honda engines with huge exhaust ports that make them very noisy!! funnily enough the standard 3-pass silencer (and empty box with divisions, or 'passes' made of swiss cheese) of a Honda is the best for gas flow etc .....not many people know that

I can always get an extra centre box added if required. I'm hoping it won't be too loud aswell, just nice and deep is what I'm aiming for.

Hope it's not too loud either - I've asked for a slightly sportier exhaust note, but also stated I don't want it to sound like a bloody Subaru Impreza (the ones with beer keg-sized exhausts).

Has anyone got a photo of their 406 with a different exhaust tip? Just looking for style tips, basically :cheesy:

Not sure I like the angled letterbox tips on your twin backbox system, Chief. Though I like the idea of having a twin backbox system like yours, I suspect it would cost extra :( when are you getting yours fitted?

I'm not that big a fan of them either, but I only paid £10 for the whole thing locally. Cut off, rotated through 180 degrees and shortened so they're more hidden and I think they should look alright. Kinda like an American muscle car.

I've got a custom built stainless system made by longlife. No probs at all, I asked for it quiet and quiet it is, a little throatier than the old one when you're on the juice but that's just nice :cheesy:

I had a 3" chrome oval tailpipe as I wanted it to look like it might have come llike that. Here's the only pic I can find of the tailpipe, sorry it's pants!

Got the exhaust fitted yesterday afternoon, and all I can say is, wow!

I have my car back - she's every bit as smooth as she was the day I bought her. And the exhaust note is deeper, which is nice.

And, while idling, the exhaust is quieter than the original exhaust ever was. It's only when I give it a bit of welly that she roars a bit.

I'm very, very impressed with the quality of the work.

I went for a single round tailpipe, rolled inwards, and bigger than the original - so it fits the exhaust pipe "notch" on the rear bumper more neatly. Looks nice - will post a photo when I get a minute (and a day that isn't ruined by rainfall)

great that it all worked out well for you. Theres nothing like a good engine and exhaust note to make you not care about burning up fuel on a quick takeoff :supafrisk:

My exhaust is giving me woeful problems. Im pretty certain that the pipes in the outlet manifold need to be welded back together :( Not a simple job

No, I just got the section after the cat replaced (so, a 6ft section of pipe, backbox, and tail pipe).

Such a difference, really, I mean just wow

Nicely done sir, hurry up and get that pic up! My chav exhaust should be getting modified and fitted on Saturday as my centre section decided to give up it's resistance to rust hence my backbox is now in the boot.

out of curiosity how much did you get your powerflow for as my local dealer said the powerflow cat back would be £329 and ATS worked out to be £220.
