2.2 sri petrol cutting out

Post by pernix »

First of all hello to you all.
We have recently purchased a 406 2.2 sri estate on a 51 plate. Has been running well for the last 2mths but today it became a nightmare. It is cutting out and will restert after 10-20 secs of turning it over. It feels like it runs out of fuel as it starts to run a little rough with no power and 9/10 just dies. Sometimes you can keep it going and it springs back into life other times it just dies but will eventually restart and travel between 1/2 mile to 2 miles and do it all again. No managment light on. The only other issue the car has is the middle exhaust is shot but i have been able to locate a new replacement but wont be with me untill tue (the exhaust was a night mare to locate as its apparantly unique to the 2.2) Any help would be very appreciated Many thanks

Can you hear the fuel pump running when it dies? How old is the fuel filter?

I does feel fuel related . My wife tells me it did it once a week ago but restarted straight away and did not reoccur ,but yesterday it gave all the problems, and got worse and worse. I will change the fuel filter but was just wondering if the fuel pump could be playing up (is it a common problem) as when it restarts all power is normal untill it dies again.

I don't think the pump is a common problem on the petrols, not as much as it is on HDis anyway  Still, if it's a similar design, albeit not pumping anything as stiff as diesel, they won't last forever. You should hear a hissing noise around the back of the car when it's running, listen for it messing about when you're having problems.

First of all I'd change your fuel filter if you've got one fitted. Quite easy to neglect when servicing... It'll be just under the car on the drivers side just in front of the rear wheelarch.

To check out your pump you'll want a multimeter and a fuse adaptor like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=217881 Plug it in to the fuel pump fuse, set your multimeter to display current, and see if the readout starts fluctuating and/or dropping to zero, especially when the car starts jumping around and dying.

these symptoms are very very reminiscent of a failing maf sensor.

it will feel like its running out of petrol, sometimes flooring it will make it pick up only to die as the throttle is released, or when pulling away from standstill.

the engine speed sensor / crank sensor will cut the motor dead too, but will usually do so hot, and restart when cooled after some minutes, if it starts within seconds id say maf.

i have taken a fault code reading with my cheap code reader and come up with 2 codes 1112 and 1152 Do these mean anything to any body? Many thanks for all the sugestions so far. Will be putting new exhaust on wed and change fuel filter at the same time.

P1112 Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor circuit Intermittent low voltage

P1152 Lack of HO2S 21 switching - Sensor indicated rich

Looks like the inlet air temp sensor has failed and caused the ecu to load the cold enrichment map when not required, and made the o2 sensor read over-rich (as it would)
