the previous owner mended the exhaust on my 2.2 sri estate with some exhaust paste and did a good job, but i think its started to blow again. not sure where from but i'll have a look over the weekend.
my question is where is the cheapest place to get a new exhaust from? buy online and fit it myself? is this easy to do?
wil exhausts from any other model 406 fit and do the job?
any other advice would be good please.

Re: 2.2 sri estate exhaust - where from
The 2.2 petrol engine is the rarest of the 406 engine family; there's just not that many of them in comparison to all the other cars. The exhaust is manufactured to suit the engine, so while another 406 exhaust may work, it won't give the same performance (may either have too little back-pressure, meaning less grunt, or too much back pressure, meaning your engine can't breathe out properly).
You may find it difficult to find a genuine replacement exhaust for this car.
That said, you have previously expressed an interest in getting a bit more out of your engine; a well-designed after-market stainless steel exhaust can help.
I'm getting one fitted on Monday, but not because I want to get more grunt out of the 1.8i engine, it's because my exhaust is riddled with rust and holes, and sounds like ball bearings in a tumble dryer. As it turned out, the cat-back customized Powerflow exhaust system will cost £320 (inc. parts, VAT and labour), which was less than the cost of a brand new exhaust from Pug.

when you say cat back, do you mean a new cat would be included?

No mate, it's everything after the CAT. I too have a full stainless system made by Longlife Exhausts, custom built for the car and came with a lifetime guarentee. I think it was £350 in 2005
. Mine had gone right on the joint between the middle and back sections which, for my HPi, were dealer only parts at the time and came to £350 (£240 & £110), so the stainless Longlife one was the same price as the mild steel pug one
.

I'm sure we've been through this before with the 2.2 and there are some exhaust bits from a V6 which will fit, and others were pretty much 2.2 specific. Try doing a search and see what comes up.

The original manufacter for the 2.2 exhaust is walker exhausts any walker distributer can supply it (euro car parts £96 + vat next day delivery) It took me a lot of digging to find this out as no exhaust supplier list it . There is another manufacturer working on a replacement which will be cheaper but that is arround 6mths away Hope this helps.
