Looks like one of those hatchback-to-saloon conversions.
Like the C4 Triomphe, the ZX saloon, Astra saloon, 206 saloon.
I heard theyre replacing the 407 and the 607 in Europe with the 508?

They are. If Peugeot released that 408 in the article to replace the 407, they might as well pack up and go home.sirwiggum wrote:I heard theyre replacing the 407 and the 607 in Europe with the 508?

No-one would notice anyway, everyone seems obsessed with 4x4 urban assault vehicles like the 400007 and egg shaped people carriers like the 30000008.eoin27 wrote:They are. The saloon car / coupe buyers all seem to be buying German.
Leaves us lot who prefer saloons/coupes/estates but also enjoy the use of our spines given the state of the roads and the German philosophy of harsh suspension == sporty.
Hatch-to-saloon conversions sell well in China, but also (as I'm sure you can testify Eoin27) strangely enough in Ireland!
I remember seeing the 306 sedan with the facelifted front, and the strangely well balanced Opel Astra (previous "new" generation) saloon.
Re: Peugeot 408 - Trip to China anyone??
I agree. But the hatch to saloon versions are mainly becasue of road tax over here. People want saloon boots with smaller, more taxable, hatch engines. The Ford Focus saloon is extremely popular here!
I would admit, if I was buying a brand new saloon car, I wouldnt go fo the 407. They really arent up to scratch. Which is a shame because when they were first out in 04, they blew the competition away! What saloon would I buy????................Mazda 6 or C5, or wait for the 508.
New coupe? Id def buy german. Cant resist the 320d coupe. Booootiful!

Agree with the 407. What a shame. A firm I know, which need reliable cars as they can get called out all over Ireland and carry heavy industrial parts, used to have a lot of 406s in their fleet and were very happy with them.eoin27 wrote:I agree. They ran a 407 for a while and were not impressed. Now running a fleet of Vectras

Have heard the same from others who liked the 406 but were dissapointed with the 407, one of whom now has a Jag XF.
Not sure. Would like a 406 coupe HDi, Brera JTD (if they sort the flimsy suspension from the GTV days), Volvo C70.New coupe? Id def buy german. Cant resist the 320d coupe. Booootiful!
It is different anyway. Once saw a modified 3 door 306 sedan "coupe" that looked quite smart, in a Impreza / Cordoba coupe style. That sedan is an abomination on that 306 namesirwiggum wrote: remember seeing the 306 sedan

I do like the looks of the Mazda 6. It looks really nice in a dark metallic blue, with twin chromed exhaust tails (there's one I regularly see on my way home from work).
I also like the look of the RX8 but am not keen on continually filling it up with oil, and the lifetime of the rotary engine is supposedly quite short too.
Audi have an A4 with a hugely powerful diesel engine though - 3.0 TDI V6, 240 horses, good for 155 MPH and 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. I could live with that

Could you live with seats made from painted concrete though, as well as a badge that screams "NOB"?highlander wrote:Audi have an A4 with a hugely powerful diesel engine though - 3.0 TDI V6, 240 horses, good for 155 MPH and 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. I could live with that

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Possibly not
Does seem like quite a nice engine though. More horses than my brother's Seat Leon Cupra 1.8 Turbo and better fuel economy = win.

The seats in Audis are like sitting in the old church aisle seats.
I will counter with the comfortable Jag XF diesel
271bhp, 155mph, 0-60mph in 5.9sec and 30mpg

Re: Peugeot 408 - Trip to China anyone??
I know someone who 'put up with' an RX8 for 12 months and going by that one (an 06 plate with less than 20K miles) it was shyte. Problems included oil leaks, rear diff, brakes and a *massive* thirst for oil i.e. thinking about it every day. The RX hasn't aged well either for some reason.highlander wrote:I also like the look of the RX8 but am not keen on continually filling it up with oil, and the lifetime of the rotary engine is supposedly quite short too.
That there 408 looks a lot like the 407 to me....

408 = pretty much the 407, on the outside at least. Probably even more stuff to wrong on the inside.
508 = scary, do a Google image search an there's even on that resembles a DB9...
No, I said it before and I'll say it again they got it right with the 406. I'm old and grumpy and I'm not changing my mind on this. Also most modern cars look absolutely ridiculous to me. There, I said it.

It gets worse as you get older, all cars look the same to me these days, they've not got any soul unlike the cars of yesteryear (i.e. cars with interesting little faults that ten-thumbed clods like me could fix with nothing more than a chisel screwdriver and a large club hammer...)

If they get it right, the 508 could look like a bargain Aston Rapide. If they get it wrong, it could look like a Porsche Panamera
