But for arguments sake it's the drivers front.
It's rectangular and probably 6" long and made of same plastic as the wheel arch liner
Better safe than sorry I say.

har har smart ass :P
Still doesn't answer my question. Many D9 shaped 406s have a D8 dash.
Particularly those built/registered in 1999. A Halfbread cast commonly referred to as D 8.5.

This is what my dash looks like. It is, in fact, a photo I took of my dash:

The mark at the bottom of the speedo says "D9/15M" if that's any help to anybody.

Also - I know it is possible to remove the black background and replace it with a white background (meaning white clocks instead of black clocks) if one is available. It just means dismantling the existing gauges and removing the black "card" that has all the scales printed on them. Is there a set of white clocks available whose background "card" has the same gauges and the same scale as mine?

The white scales appear only to be available on the HDIs from 2002 or so onward.
The dash unit for them is multiplexed and has coloured LEDs as opposed to bulbs.

The actual white graphic is a thin piece of plastic. It has no colour backing to it.
The colours come from the LEDs.
So if you want nasty white light indicators and warning lights, you can take the white graphic and retrofit it to your clocks.
However, you only have 4 guages, where as the white clocks have the 5.

In short, been there, tried it, doesn't work :(

Bitch is, there is a 2004 HDI sitting in the scrappies with a white dial kit!
Last time I bought one, they wanted £30.

No they dont. Believe me, we've been over this

edit: And the coupe club refers to D8.5's as non fully multiplexed D9's (i.e. the ones without Com2000 controls). Circa mid 1999- late 2001

It would appear they do though. The saloons appear to have gone through a gradual shift from D8 to D9.
We have seen photos on this very forum of D9 facelifted 406s with a D8 dash and centre console.
Of the ones I've seen here, they were all 1999 models.
Just the other day I saw a D9 03 reg saloon with D8 mirrors and non colour coded door handles all round.

Hi Puggy - mine just has the four clocks (fuel, revs, speedo, and coolant temp). Are the four gauges I have likely to be exactly the same size as the left-most two and right-most two clocks in your cluster?

I'd quite like the rings if they are the same size, can be easily removed from your cluster (I wouldn't want the surrounding plastic, so there'd be no point in posting it all - just pop the rings in a jiffy bag), and are easy to fit.

If it's not easy to remove them, then I'll get a set of after-market chromed dial-rings off of eBay.
