EGR Suprise!

Post by johnboy »

Hi all,

Ive just been attempting to take off my EGR valve from my 2002 406 HPI as it failed mot on emissions!

On taking apart ive noticed its been blanked off before?! what i would like to know is if i take out the metal blank plate so as it functions as it should, would this in theory now pass mot? im desperate and need help as im lost without my car :(

thanks

Depends why it was blanked. You could always remove it and see if it helps.

Nah don't do that John, maybe petrol treatment would be better?

Don't know how to test if it's working unfortunately, might be worth giving it a clean with carb cleaner? Praps someone blanked it off 'cos they thought it was knackered when it was just dirty. If you find out how to test it let us know, also can you take some pics of what you're doing, I've a feeling it'll come in handy one day!

Ok update!

I got the blank plate off.... put it all back together and now its abit smokey, more like steamy smoke really if that makes sense... its kinda white in colour!

Would this just be all the gunk clearing out? unfortunately i cant take it out for a good clearing out as it has no mot?

i cudnt get the egr valve off enough to be able to clean it without making more work for myself anyway!! , so i ended up cutting the plate out.

Any thoughts appreciated!

thanks

Anti-pollution is not good. It could be the CAT that failed the MOT.

I'd give the MAF a good cleaning if it has one. I know nothing about HPi's (except I know I want one)
I'd spend a few quid on an EGR solenoid from the stealer.
I'd give it a good thrashing and then clear the codes

I'd then probably pass the MOT :cheesy:

Yeah its got a MAF. On inspection of the top breather hoses they are badly gunked up with oily gunge, so much so that ill prob get a new one, its not helping matters i dont think!

im just hoping the smoke clears abit maybe a few more warm up's with abit of revving mite clear it out?

when i get the new pipe ill prob take apart the breather hoses and clean them out!

I would say your newly-opened air path is allowing oil/gunge to be burnt through the egr tubing (when the EGR recirculates). It's basically taking hot exhaust gas and passing it back into the inlet manifold; if it hasn't been doing this for a while then oil will be getting burnt off for a while.

The function of the EGR is to lower combustion temps and lower NOx emissions (maybe why it failed the MOT with it blanked off). It's not generally beneficial to blank off Petrol EGR's unlike some Diesels.

I think you'll need a new EGR and new replacement tubing back to the manifold.

Well ive taken apart the top breather hose, the one that runs from the MAF over to the manifold (The one thats all blocked and oily) i rang peugeot and ordered the replacement pipework which is £22... not too bad, tis easier to replace then clean coz its broken up and oily! so will help hopefully.

The metal flexi pipe which comes off the EGR was oily inside yesterday so will tackle that when i replace the EGR. By the way.. how the hell do u get the thing out? i could only move it back about 2 inches off the block, what do i need to remove?

Where is this oil coming from? i think i need to replace my rocker gasket anyway as it is leaking badly!!! would this be the cause?

Leaving the other bits for now as i wanna make sure the engines running right first.

I think the problem here is we honestly don't know how to help

The HPi is very rare and having detailed knowledge of replacing its EGR even rarer.

Yeah sorry John, like Welly said, you're the trailblazer on this one (but I'm very interested to know whatever you find out)

I think the bit in the red box is the throttle body motor, if you take the big hose off that's coming from the air filter you can see the butterfly valve in there, I reckon the bit you've boxed is the motor that operates that butterfly.
