Calling all HPI owners

My engine on my 406 is really noisey, sounds like a diesel!!! anyone else got this problem or found a solution? i read on here something about it thats been changed and made it alot quieter?

I dont think this is normal and ive checked all levels etc...

As far as I know the noise is characteristic of this engine, this has been mentioned before. The fuel is injected directly into the cylinder under high pressure and produces a noise that is slightly unusual for a petrol.

I found a link once to a detailed description of this engine, I think DaiRees would still have it somewhere.

I know this problem on the HDi's is directly to do with the injectors wearing. Perhaps this is the same on the HPi as they are closely related. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The Black Pearl used to say his sounded like a diesel but mine didn't at the time. I've noticed recently though that it's starting to get a bit chuggy in it's old age, only really noticable at tickover when cold, goes away as it warms up. Guess it's something to do with the injection as Welly and Eoin say.

I used to have a Mitsubishi Space Wagon GDi which was also direct injection & also sounded slightly like a diesel when cold so think the noise m,ay be something to do with direct injection engines. I also found out while owning it, that direct injection engines can get manked up very easily due to a combination of poor quality fuel & too many short runs. Is this an issue that comes up often with the HPi? I know it was very common on Mitsubishi/Volvo GDis & also heard it was starting to be a problem with the VW/Audi FSi engines too.

there are handfull of HPIs here and we usually drive about maximum 50 to 60 kilometers a day up and down. Low mileage trips so to speak. However they've earned a quite good reputation for better fuel consumption and reliability. Something to do with tropical weather?

The lower fuel consumption of the HPi is due to the more efficient design of the engine (direct injection means that you are getting more of a reaction with less fuel being wasted).

Unfortunately warm, wet tropical air doesn't help the combustion process; your engines there will be less efficient than the same engine in a colder climate (i.e. France, where the thing was designed in the first place).

That said, the weather we're getting, I'd take an HPi car in a tropical climate and be happy with it

Hmmm seems to be a normal thing then? Maybe an oil change and a clearout might help. Thanks for the info guys

I'd be running it on Super Unleaded first, it's about 5p/ltr more at the moment but can pay for itself in better fuel economy. I run my T5 on Tesco's 99 ron or V-power. It's never had 95 ron in the last 18 months.

Fuel efficiency due to direct injection is very much understood. But Mitsu GDI systems have earned quite bad reputation over here. Amidst that Peugeot HPI has a better reliability and as per my mechanic they haven't had any major engine repairs of HPI's upto now. I thought tropical weather helps to run it on optimum temperature all the time and thus helps reliability.

You didn't reset the Ron Interface Adaption Meter did you?

Basically, you switch on the ignition then - indicate 3 ticks left and 7 right, press the brake pedal for 3.6 seconds and flash the reversing lights 4 times. Your car is now adapted to run on high performance fuel!

Just went out amd tried it there. The LCD gave me this message though GET BACK TO WORK AND STOP FALLING FOR WELLYS ANTICS
