Re: Top Speed
I ain't driving for 7 hours, ferry for an hour then driving another 3 or 4 hours, just to see how fast my car goes

Re: Top Speed
My mate had a 1998 1.1 106 that could do 120mph. We always said it defied logic. He's had loads of cars since but says the 106 was his favourite. It also came in a 1.0 flavour. The 1.1 must have been way better even though its only 100cc up, otherwise whats the point.DaiRees wrote:I once had a (rented) diesel 106 up to 106 got a photo of the speedo somewhere

When I was a teenager I had an 850 Mini that I could take off the clock. It'd get to about 50 (pointing straight up) then the needle would fall all the way to pointing straight down

Re: Top Speed
I don't know about anyone else but I find a cars top speed a bit scary; you've little control left, the brakes aren't enough and the whole thing is on the raggedy edge. In fact you are more likely to knacker the thing than gain any pleasure from your high-speed antics
I much prefer a very strong 50 to 90 kinda thing.
I have been there though I must say, when I was young and invinsible......

no that would be just plain daft, but when you have a reason to be in the area, it would be rude not to, dont you think?
Still interested enough to check the ferry prices though I see

The 406 handles its top end very well. I've been in cars that feel extremely uncomfortable (as in "I'm going to DIEEEEEEE!") to be in over a ton, but over 120mph, the 406 just suffers from a fair amount of wind noise. Handling is a bit iffy on tighter corners over 130mph due to the high profile tyres, but on the straight I have no concern whatsoever about doing higher speeds. Even the saloon brakes perform well braking hard from such speedsWelly wrote:I don't know about anyone else but I find a cars top speed a bit scary; you've little control left, the brakes aren't enough and the whole thing is on the raggedy edge. <steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Top Speed
That's as maybe in your Volvo. But the 406 handles the top end pretty well. I remember doing 110 to 120 on the German autobahn in my saloon and it felt tight and comfortable with plenty more to give.Welly wrote:I don't know about anyone else but I find a cars top speed a bit scary; you've little control left, the brakes aren't enough and the whole thing is on the raggedy edge. Re: Top Speed
The fastest I've ever (imagined i've driven) was when I hit 135mph in my dads 405 estate (2.0 petrol auto) I found the sensation of speed alot more intense, previously the fastest I'd driven had been 115mph in my 405 D-turbo. Luckily for me my co-pilot spotted a police car coming off a slip road further up the motorway, giving us ample time to slow down to sensible speeds
The fastest I've been as a passenger was 140mph in an Audi RS4, it may not seem sensational, but that got from 0 to 140 and back to 0 before my HDI could have got much past 60.lol. great car, and then the speakers popped up out of the dashboard, how about that for a party piece

~Enjoy it while you can Countrypug - rumours are they are to SPECS the M1 and M2 here
Getting a fast car to a fast speed isn't as much fun as getting a slow car to a mediocre speed
I remember my old ZX 1.9 XUD (n.a., no turbo), getting it to top 80 involved a long downhill section. I remember on the road coming from the Forth Road Bridge into Fife, there is a downhill dip followed by a long uphill crawl as the road turns into motorway, I used to try and build the momentum up on the downhill to try and get up the hill at a reasonable speed, without someone pulling into the outside lane in front, or BMWs tailgating forcing me into the inside to slow down and lose the momentum. Fun and games
Once let a friend drive my old 1.2 4 speed Clio on a roadtrip down England, only to wake up from a nap to see him (hypothetically, allegedly) doing over a ton on the motorway
, overtaking hugely expensive machinery. He said it was fine due to the sensible traffic policing approach of Durham Constabulary (allegedly).
Smoothest car I've driven at speed was a V6 Opel Omega. Sitting cruising on one of the new Irish motorways, looked at the speedo and it was (hypothetically, allegedly) on the wrong side of 120... (and that's not km/h!) (allegedly).
The Alfa GTV would cruise happily at high speed, but it was more fun on the twisties, spooling the twinspark up

Yeah, I've been fearing these would appear at some stage. Was at a wedding at the Clandeboye Lodge last month, first time in years I've been down in that direction and couldnt believe the amount of average speed camerassirwiggum wrote:~Enjoy it while you can Countrypug - rumours are they are to SPECS the M1 and M2 here

I never risk it on the motorway now during the day, seen too many people pulled over on the hard shoulder getting booked
