Nintendo DS 'TT' cards??

Me again, (Mr Knows-Nothing about techy stuff) my tea pot lids keep going on about these TT cards like what their friends have got so they can expand the DS features and play more games/play music etc? They don't play the DS much anymore (perhaps this is why?) but every now and again this comes up and I said I would check it out.

We asked one of the other parents about it and it sounded a bit iffy as, somehow, they got a shed load of games of the internet for free? and we all know what that means eh? I don't want to pinch free stuff if you're not supposed to.

Anyone know about all this and can offer any advice?

Like you, my 10 year old lad has a DS, and he was banging on about an "R4 chip" for it which allows him to play countless games for free.

Me being the miserable old sceptic ignored him for about 6 months, till the incessant nagging got the better of me, so i got dragged to a local mobile phone cheapy type shop, in the local high street.

The r4 chip is basically a mini SD card, in a holder which is the same size as the normal DS games, the little kit came with a USB mini Sd card thing which you plug into your PC and aquire free games off the net. File sharing websites i assume?

I got his grandad to do the internet stuff tbh as he has more time at home, but last time i looked he had about 35 games on this chip, the good thing is you can take out the R4 thing, and pop normal games back in without it affecting anything.

I was more concerned about it knackering his DS up but its fine.

They're handy for Japanese market games, games you otherwise wouldn't get over here.

My kids have the R4/R4i's and they're great.

We stick 8gb+ cards in there and those long car journeys are no longer filled with someone having to scream at the kids to shut up lol

Certainly worth it. Have a look at Deal Extreme.

i 2nd that, R4's are great, good thing is when they get bored, just delete the game off and replace it with another.

The only downside is that the kids think it's OK. Instead of paying £25-30 as a treat, it's well... yeah you get the drift.

Ah but even when I was a kid, everyone was swapping blank tapes on the playground to copy c64/speccy games using their ghetto blasters because they couldn't afford the £2.99... Then it moved to copied Amiga discs...

It's just how things are these days.

I think about 90% of the people that buy things like games, music and software, clearly don't know there is another way of getting them for free if not at a reduced cost.

Those remaining are the hardcore fans that like to spend the money.

I don't condone illegal file sharing but there are plenty of people doing it. I'll go to the cinema to watch a film that I think the viewing experience will be lost if it were watched in any other way.

I remember mid 90s

2 floppies for a copy of SimCity 2000
3 floppies for a copy of Indycar
4 floppies for a copy of Nascar
5 floppies for a copy of Doom2
8 floppies for a copy of Windows for Workgroups 3.11

At least when CDROMs came out it saved swapping all those floppies. Then eventually CD writers. Games developers are catching on though, with all sorts of licencing and registration.
