what engine??

Post by kevtherev »

a friend of mine bought a 1.8 citreon xantia "stateside",about a month before i bought my 406. both cars are on t plates and i commented that the engines etc should be the same :?:(my 406 is 1.8) thing is his xantia seems quicker like alot quicker (mine isn't exactly slow) he reckons that coz its the "stateside" spec he has the m16(?) engine. what is the m16 engine and would his car have that? (also i had never heard of the stateside either)

I always thought stateside meant american? I'm sure the m16 engine was found in the 405 if memory serves.

My old 1.8 16v Xantia (originally an English import on a 'V' plate) I believe had an XU7 engine with a 16v head. Approx 110bhp.

Should be the same engine as the 1.8 16v Pug.

Any differences would be 8v vs 16v, servicing etc. The Xantia will also "feel" smoother as it has the hydraulic suspension. Might be a bit lighter as the rear tailgate is all plastic and glass.

I think the Mi16 engine is the XU9 1.9, 158bhp.

Stateside is just a special edition. Citroen are big into them. Like Rapier etc. are to Peugeot.

The Xantia has a disclaimer under the bonnet not to drive in America!

The federal regulations of the late 70s banned cars from not having a fixed bumper position at all times - Impossible with hydraulic suspension!

Some CXs I think were sold in the states? Later CXs and XMs are grey imports after the bumper position rule was relaxed.

The Mi16 engine came in two guises, the first being an alloy block 1.9 version which made 160bhp, the later cast iron 2l version made 155bhp. The later engine was also used in the Citroen ZX Volcane 16V and 306 XSi/S16, and as a base for the GTi6 engine where the main differences were inlet and exhaust manifold and the cams were a different profile. A 1.8 engine cannot be an Mi16 engine. I've had 3 405 Mi16's over the years, 2 1.9's and a 2.0.

The 1.9 engines were only found in the 405Mi16 and the BX GTi 16V in this country, although there was a 309GTi16 on the continent.

Now you know! I'm assuming Stateside is just a spec level like the 'Westcoast' and 'Eastcoast' they used on the Saxo's to make them seem a lot cooler than they actually were.

I makes me :( that a 1.9 petrol (presumably n/a at that) can have almost twice the horse count as my 1.9 TD. Makes me :( and , and also reminds me that I ought to get of my arse and go tool up the fuel delivery. Bleh.

Anyway, while we're on the subject of Stateside does anyone know if a LHD 406 would be legal in the States, with or without modification to meet their laws?

Ah but it will use twice as much fuel!

I went from a 150bhp 2.0 petrol Alfa getting on average 20mpg to a 90bhp 2.0 diesel 406 getting on average 40mpg!

You would probably need to import it as a personal import, probably add side markers etc.
I think that it is slightly easier to import as a personal import to the US these days. Thanks, in part, to Bill Gates wishing to import a Porsche 959...
As it does not have hydraulic suspension there would be no worries there, although I have seen pictures of Citroen XMs imported to the US.

Parts would be difficult to come by, the last Pug sold in the US was the 405, unless you can find a French Car Club.

It would be cool, and I've always wanted to do, to import a UK reg car, something that is not sold in the US like a 406 coupe, and drive across America. But then I'm strange, and it would probably cost more in shipping to / from / insurance etc. than it would be worth! :cheesy:

I'm sure I've seen something on that recently (just can't remember where) that US XMs are personal imports, they were never officially imported because of the law about 5mph bumpers being at a fixed hight.

If you can personal import an XM, a 406 should be a piece of cake! :D

Bah, only allowed to nest three quotes :D

True, but have you considered that by spending more money on fuel and driving faster, you'll be more awesome? It is important to look awesome whilst driving :)

Yes I did look awesome in an Alfa Romeo GTV :D :cheesy: , but unfortunately it looked less awesome with creaking suspension, a blown exhaust, non-functioning wipers and not being able to afford to drive it too far.

The 406 is one of the more handsome of the diesel saloons....

Oh yes, in the past week I've had a fellow officer, a 19 year old girl in a very short skirt and my own grandmother all tell me what a nice car it is. Admittedly in the first case it was at a distance, in the second case it was dark ( :supafrisk: ) and in my grandmother's case... well, she's 80. Still...
