have you checked the Air filter recently?? my 90 HDi was a tad smokey on acceleration for a while after a long run across Europe (1500 miles) but a basic service i.e filters and oil sorted it, with this bloody volcano thing at the moment i think air filters might be getting a bit more abuse than normal

cheap and easy check tho, just have a look at yours if its crappy replace :) worth a try i reckon.

not enough air being admitted to the cylinders somehow, prob dirty air filter etc and fuel pressure rises so fast before airflow is established to match.

EGR valve. I had the same smoke, same mileage, fitted new valve, smoke gone.

Get yourself a nosey around the valve with the engine running and reach across to the throttle pot and blip the throttle - if you can smell burnt diesel then the EGR is leaking (will look a bit sooty too).

My 90bhp hdi smoked a fair bit on a run to europe just, more noticable because a mate followed me all the way there in his car, apparantly pulling hard from the Autoroute toll booths it was very black.

When we got back it was due its full service, so it had air filter, fuel filter and oil change, followed by an italian tune up - its as clean as a whistle now.

The air filter was grubby though, and the fuel filter was deffinatly due.
