Manchester

Post by sirwiggum »

406ing it to Manchester on the way back from Silverstone in July.

Safer booking a ferry than a flight across with the unpredictable volcanoes.

Have never been to Manchester, kept meaning to go when I lived in Scotland but never got round to it.

So anyone from that area want to recommend a good place to stay (fairly central but with 406 parking :cheesy: , do any of the local uni halls open as tourist accomodation during summer?), good pubs :cheesy: , good things to see (eg. transport museum for me, trafford centre for her :cheesy: , no interest in football I'm afraid! Though Granada studios might be worth a look round?)

Cheers!

Edit:

Is parking available here? http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... .9,,0,1.95 :D :cheesy:

Well where should i start, this is my home town and i miss it so much :(

try the MOSI (museum of science and industry) not too many motors but lots of planes, trains and really big stuff, then there is the natural science museum and the imperial war museum all free and very interesting.

As for somewhere to stay i would ask what you want to do whilst you're there and how long are you staying, there are a couple of hotels near the trafford centre that are reasonably priced and within walking distance of said "hell hole" and a 12-15 min drive from all the places i mentioned, all with good parking, there is an indoor sky slope thats fun for either just d1cking about on or skiing/boarding with good coffee shops and a few bars round it all within spying distance of the slope so fun just to watch whilst sipping your latte, again 400 meters from the trafford centre, a cruise up the manchester ship canal to liverpool will set you back about 8-9 quid and you get a free coach back too, hate to say it but if u do the cruise thingy its worth having look round bin dipper land (liverpool) especially albert dock.

off to put lil fella to bed but back wiv more soon!!

The link you posted seems to be corry, am i right? if so loads of parking round there, not the cheapest but plenty of it, if its sunny you could do heaton park, very nice park fairly big but bits to see and stuff to do, there is a transport museum of sorts, a bus museum! my lad loved it but then he is only 2, i quite enjoyed it too tbh

i could go on for hours, but give me an idea of your intended length of stay and a rough budget for the hotel and i will come up with something, so much choice and too much for me to just bang on about really.

God I miss Manchester :( :(

Thank you for your reply!

We are planning on doing 2 nights Silverstone and 2 nights in Manchester. Tight budget so was hoping for £50-60 a night if possible? The like of Edinburgh etc. this means off-term student digs.

The link was corrie I found :) Just thought it was amusing :)

Science museum sounds great, not sure if there would be time enough to do the Liverpool canal. Time and money are short or we could have stayed longer!

Well i would suggest that you didnt stay in the centre of manchester unless thats what your really looking for, you will pay about twice the price for half the space if you do, most things you want to do i.e trafford centre, MOSI, corrie, etc etc are all distances that you would want to drive apart anyway, stay somewhere just outside mcr city centre at maybe an Etap or campinile hotel and you will pay about 50 quid a night for the room then drive into mcr if you want to do the day time walk about, taxis are cheap enough if u wanna go out at nite and get a bit tipsy  might cost you a tenner in the taxi for a 10 min drive out to your hotel but will save you at least 50 quid per nite in hotel bills, there are some good central ish hotels that dont charge the earth, i will try dig out some links for you, but i would suggest looking around yourself and letting me know what you like the look of and i will give you some alternatives or at least my view on the area as a local (sadly x now) i lived and worked in manchester city centre for years and lived within 7 miles of the centre for the rest of the time so i know the place well. post up anything you think of and i will try and answer as honestly and helpfully as i can

Thank you for your advice 7403406!

I will have to sit down with the prettier half and look at hotels and get a few possibles and run them past you. Probably closer to payday!

Cheers!

You could try here, Ibis Charles St this is where I stay when over doing my Masters. It's fairly basic (breakfast not included) but quite nice, in the university area, (there is hotel/halls around the corner iirc around the same sort of money) and you're within walking distance of pretty much anywhere in the city centre and secure parking right across the road.

Prettier half has booked us in a hotel in Wigan, near her relatives.

Any good pubs in Wigan?

oh I am sorry mate :( ,

never mind its only a 40 min drive or so back to civilisation, you say the prettier half's got relatives there?

I bet they're all really close too, like brother and sister being known as Mr & Mrs.

cant really help re the pub thing, but you definitely want to try the local food delicacy the "Pie Butty" its all Wigans good for in my eyes :P :P

feel free to make my comments known to the "Pie Eaters" when you get there, they enjoy a good ribbing.

Yea I wanted in Manchester and she said to me last night "by the way I booked a hotel near my aunt and uncle in Wigan".

They're from Ireland too though, just ended up there.

Planning to go to Manchester and take a day trip there.

Was just wondering where I was gonna booze.
