I have a 1996 406 Exec 1.9 Diesel, I've had 2 Citreons in the past - can I ask some probably divvy questions?
1. is the 1.9TD motors in the 406, PUG and Citroen the same?
2. I have a grumble on front end, on tickover and when driving - sounds (hard to describe) either like excessive blowing from exhaust or 'tinging' from one of the wheels where the drive belts are
3. It tonks along but seems to be holding back - is there a known issue with egr's needing cleaning with these?
4. Clutch peddle feels a bit sluggish on way back up - can you adjust these or tweek the clutch cable (oil it or tighten it)
5. Accelerator - ditto above
6. Gears are a bit 'innacurate', can cable be tweeked?
7. Citroen 'clunk' on back end - had it on all mine in past - never fixed them though - bushes or is there another traditional issue?
8. as with item 2 - get a strong whiff of exhaust now and again
9. Rev counter goes mental now and again
10. Handbrake is wobbly (side to side), are these held on by bolts or welded in place under the consol?
Love the motor (all that leather and buttons - ooeerrrr misses) - only paid £400 for it taxed and tested and only got it 2 days ago so not had chance to break - sorry, fix it yet so any tweeks/ideas much appreciated
Cheers
Gaz

1. Pretty sure yes.
4. Rusty cable or worn outer sheath; try oiling it but you'll probably need to change it.
5. Ditto above!!
7. Anti rollbar bushes the usual suspect; also drop links & top links. All cheap bits and fairly straightforward fitting.
9. Usually caused by dry joint on instrument cluster PCB; dodgy french soldering!
10. Handbrake bracket is held in with 4 bolts from memory. You'll need to remove the centre console & then you can get to them.

406 is basically a Xantia under the skin, without the "balls"VespaSkin wrote:Your a star - this car is the dogs bollux - really comfy - bit battered on outside but I have spray kit - need to find paint code next

(Springs instead of spheres)
The engine is the same XUDT as used in Citroens.
Good luck with the spraying, on the D9 the paint code is on the Drivers side lower A pillar, but none of the sprays I got, including from Peugeot, are a great match for the actual colour.

Welcome to the club, and would you like to swap your interior for my plebeian grey cloth one? ^_^
