Peugeot 308 GTi 1.6 200bhp!!

Post by eoin27 »

Its amazing. 200bhp from a 1.6 and still returns impressive fuel economy! I wonder how well it will do at 100k miles?

Also, I noticed that Top Gear are up to their usual play on words in order to piss off Peugeot.

"Alongside 2010's muscle-bound world of 270bhp Golf Rs and 340bhp Focus RS500s, the Peugeot 308 GTI hot hatch's 1.6-litre turbocharged four pushing out 200bhp is more ‘Boxercise' than UFC."

Eh, of course its not as fast as them, its not supposed to be. Look at the money they cost. Compare it to a MK6 GTi and you have a cheaper, waaaay more economical alternative

"That turbo'd four-pot - the same as in the RC-Z - is good for a 7.7secs dash to 62mph. A standard MkIV Golf GTI takes less time to get from 50mph to 75mph."

But what is the 308's 50-75mph time? Shouldnt they be comparing like with like?

Sorry, I agree with TG on this one...

It seems a bit "limp wristed" in today's hot hatch market. Like, it doesn't even look good going slow at the same time!

I agree with part of that argument. 200bhp isnt enough any more is it? However, it is a smaller engine and the fuel economy is fantastic compared to a Golf GTi. But ya, fuel economu is not the point of a GTi. I dont know what Peugeots obsession with small engines is. My dad would be tempted by a new facelift 407 but they're only available in Ireland with a 1.6HDi 110bhp engine. The 3000000000000008 is only available here with that engine also. :?

You have to bear in mind the weight of modern cars with all their safety gizmos and 200bhp is probably equivalent to about 130bhp in a 1990's car :|

It's all about the - powah teh wait rayshow

Unfortunately if (god forbid) he hit something hard in it it would fold up like a paper hat

My old 1986 XR2 had 96bhp but only weighed 840Kgs  I think that's 110 bhp per tonne, factor that up to a modern 1450kg car and it would give it 160bhp :o

.........unless my maths have let me down :(

True. Its amazing how unsafe those old 80's and 90's cars are. Did anyone see that head on collision crash test on FIfth Gear between the Volvo 940 estate and the Renault Modus??

Doesnt end well for the volvo occupants. The Renault driver could have opened the door and walked out.

I think this move will reduce the value of an already damaged 'Peugeot GTI' brand. However, we look at this from the perspective of Peugeot connoisseurs who over the past decade (maybe more in some cases) have driven Pug's finest in terms of handling, looks and performance (106, 205, 306, 309, 405, (406?) anyone...) I've no doubt that Pugs marketeers have been busy and see that there is a gap in the market for a less extreme watered down hot hatch, (a luke warm hatch if you will). The 308 is apparently a very good car in terms of practicality and slapping a GTI badge on the bootlid and giving it a few extra horsies will no doubt steer your sensible car buyer who doesnt know/understand or care about pugs past heritage away from the Renault/Ford/Seat stealerships and into Peugeots.

It could be a good move to selling a few more 308's but I worry that the overall damage to the 'GTI' brand will eclipse that. The 206 and 207 gti's have been a shadow of the 205 and this latest 308 could be a final nail in the coffin. I hope I'm wrong...

I remember well the 205 GTi but it was way out of my budget at the time. I also remember how unique it was and how they seemed to get the thing 'just right' something they don't seem to be able to do now :(

I had a 205 1.9 GTi,

it was such a lemon,

but what fun and a true GTi for the three months it lasted me before it decided enough was enough and had to give up with the clutch, the rear shocks, the front brake discs and pads and numerous other knocks and noises being the death of it.

I duly put it into the garage at home and bought myself a haynes BOL and started to dismantle the thing as per the book, after 3 weeks gave up and moved to another country, Spain as it happened, I wonder what happened to the car??

I really did do a midnight flit and often wonder what happened to that motor, I wasnt running away from anything too dodgy just a failed 9 year relationship and a stressful job before your minds go into overtime

that was 11 years ago, and here I am in Poland, married with a child now so no running away this time :cheesy:

As for the latest effort by pug, I have to say it looks like a half arsed attempt at what we all know they are capable of, sad really, I wonder if they will ever get back round to making silly fast stuff agin?

The XU9 Mi16 shits on the 406 XU10 in a straight line and through the corners!

They seem to be getting rarer and rarer over your end of the world - Here, they were 50k new, around the price of two new Vectras back in 1989!

quite simply:
Question- £23,000 would you buy one???
Answer- no bloody way

Pesonally for me, 23k means a solid Jap import with a goof few ££££ left over to mess with it. Or even a nearly new Focus RS mk2. The GTI badge on any car is more than likely going to apeal to a petrolhead or someone who knows something, with that said compare the prices to most hot hatches around that kind of power figure, even from brand new. I can't help but feel that 23k is a monstrous price for not even a half decent looking or performing car; consequently a big turn off. Sorry but just my opinion of it.

I would buy one when they are 3 years old and a third of the 23k.
