Anyway, back to the rusty Landy. I think the big problem is the electrolytic reaction between the aluminimunimuniumium and the steel chassis (especially the firewall I seem to recall) but back then manufacturers relied on rust to stop their cars lasting forever. Nowdays they're pretending to do better on that score, relying on expensive electronic failures to scrap the cars instead.
